Mark Twain Medical Center Now Offers Comfort Kits to All Overnight Patients

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center [MTMC] announced today that all overnight patients will now receive comfort kits as part of a commitment to partner with patients and improve their experience. The kits are designed to offer specific amenities that can help patients feel more comfortable and assist them in interacting more proactively with their caregivers. The hospital will offer both “Quiet Kits” and “Relax and Refresh Kits” to all overnight patients. The Quiet Kits contain items such as ear plugs, an eye mask, a “Voices Down Please” door hanger, lip balm, and Sudoku and crossword puzzle books. A “Questions for My Doctor” booklet and pencil are also included to help patients communicate their questions and concerns to their care team...

The Refresh and Relax kits include all of the Quiet Kit items as well as an array of refreshing hygiene products such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo/body wash, and hand sanitizer, conveniently contained in a travel bag.

“We want to partner with our patients to help them through what can often be a disruptive and stressful situation,” said JoAnne Jeffords, chief nursing officer at MTMC. “Restful sleep is one of the most important elements of healing, and our patients have told us that they have a more positive experience when their environment is quiet.”

To create the kits MTMC’s parent company, Dignity Health, partnered with health care supplier Medline and designer Deborah Adler. The kits will be provided to patients at all Dignity Health hospitals upon admission to the hospital. Many items included in the comfort kits were already provided to patients upon request. Through bulk purchasing, the new amenity is cost-neutral to the hospital.

“We are proud to partner with Dignity Health on this important initiative to help patients heal more comfortably during their stay in the hospital,” said Sue MacInnes, Medline’s chief marketing officer.

“Through our research and manufacturing expertise, coupled with Dignity Health’s commitment to their patients, we feel we’ve really hit the mark on how to build the kits, extend the hospital’s brand and image and, most importantly, understand how a few meaningful changes can make a big difference in the patient experience.”

“Handing a patient a well-designed package creates an unexpected experience and leaves a positive impression that lasts beyond their hospital stay,” says quiet kit designer Deborah Adler, and principal of Adler Design. “This small gesture conveys the care team’s commitment to their patient’s comfort, and strengthens the connection between them.”
