Bear Valley resident Roger Test saved by first responders ~From Allen Test

Bear Valley, CA...Heartfelt thanks to the paramedics and first responders who received a 911 call in the middle of the night last week to the residence of Roger Test, age 67, a long time resident of Bear Valley. Roger had fallen during the previous night and broke several ribs. Not realizing how serious the injury was, he took some anti-inflammatories and went back to bed. In fact, a broken rib had caused a puncture to one of his lungs and resulted in a medical condition called a "pneumothorax". As time went by, his lungs began to leak air into his body...

After many hours the following day of stoically bearing chest pain and shortness of breath, Roger went into the bathroom and saw his face in the mirror and recalled that he looked like a chipmunk with his neck and face swollen by the air that had entered his body. Finally realizing that his condition was quite serious, he called 911 just as he was slipping into unconsciousness. The paramedics treated him and had to revive him several times on the way to the hospital. He was flown by helicopter to Doctors Hospital in Modesto, which was unable to deal with his injuries and he was then flown to Sutter Hospital in Roseville, where he was admitted and treated.

Roger is very lucky to be alive today. Several times during his evacuation to the hospital his heart and lungs failed but the heroic efforts of the paramedics saved him.

He is recovering quickly thanks to the effort of those who have cared for him. He hopes to be released from the hospital in a few days and return to Bear Valley and resume his life, enjoying many more years of skiing and playing music with his friends.

We should all be grateful for the paramedics, firemen, nurses, EMTs and other wonderful, dedicated men and women who live among us and provide such important services. Please show your appreciation to these folks and realize that the next time it might be you or a member of your family whose life is on the line.

Sincerely, Allen Test, Angels Camp
