Beating the Heat And The Dog Days of Summer
Angels Camp, CA...The warm weather is an instant invitation to go outside and get active. Our spring has been exceptionally warm and brief summer rains are not going to change that trend for long. Given the high temperatures that are sure to continue through the fall, it is best to keep a few things in mind to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke....
Prepare for your outdoor activities.
Wear appropriate clothing that is light weight and helps you stay cool.
Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes prior to going outside. The American Dermatology recommends a broad spectrum (UVA + UVB) protection at is water resistant and SPF 30 or greater. Reapply at least every two hours.
Hydrate. Drink plenty of fluids before during and after activity to stay hydrated. Avoid drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine especially if you are working hard or exercising, these can cause dehydration. If you are playing sports or exercising intensely, include fluids that contain electrolytes, like Gatorade or eating foods high in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
Recuperate properly. Retire to the shade or some other place inside with air conditioning if possible.
Above all, listen to your body even after you go inside. If you have such symptoms as heat cramps nausea or an elevated temparature for longer than an hour seek medical attention. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided.
All of us at Pinnacle Physical Therapy wish you a wonderful summer filled with healthy activities and fun. We hope this short list will help you do so.
