Rail Road Flat Says Thank You To The Supporters of 2013 Tiger Fest

Rail Road Flat, CA...Thank you to all who attended and volunteered at the 2013 Tiger Fest Fundraiser benefiting the Friends of Rail Road Flat School Enrichment Program. The dinner annually prepared by chefs Magali and Bell was wonderful African influenced cuisine, the auction was packed with over 35 wonderful items, and the entertainment was fabulous. The night began with students drumming on the front porch under the leadership of Mark Dyken, while inside the silent auction and no-host bar were opening up. The dinner was accompanied by live music from classical guitarist Gordon Rowland fallowed by annually performing duo Nedra and Julio. The live auction concluded the evening with oars rafting trip, custom James Aaron’s platter, and even a Noreen Huberty Rum cake....

The proceeds raised from the evening will go to support the enrichment program now being offered during school hours to alleviate the load of four grade combos. Throughout the day various grades will be subdivided among enrichment program leaders for smaller focus groups specialized in various subjects.

Along with grants, this fundraiser is the only funding sources TFORRFS operate on. We would like to thank the community members who attend this event showing their support (many of whom do not have children in the school but understand the importance of the school’s presence). We would also like to thank the many volunteers including Magali McGreevy, Bell, Greg, and Kayla Francisco, Kelly, Marilyn and John Riley, Melody Deaver, Martha and John O’Leary, Allen and Eliesha Clark, Terri Goffinet, Janet Trinkle, Sarah and John Alfred, Penny West, Julie Bullington and Ashley Locke, Kristi and Camden Givens, Amy Frost, Gil and Jess Luna, Colleen Sequiera, Kathy Risso, Rheanna Coats, Annika Jordan, Nicole Alfred, Jasmine Blair, Volkmar Druebbish, and many others along the way. The musicians who kindly donate their time Nedra, Julio, and Gordon Rowland. Mark Dyken for teaching the students drumming during the enrichment program the week prior to the event and leading their live drumming show. Along with the many businesses who donated to the auction including; The Sacramento Zoo, Hearst Castle, Aquarium of the Bay, Golf Land, Micke Grove Zoo, Jackson Rancheria, Stockton Children’s Museum, Gymboree, Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation, Glen Wharregard, Edie Schimbre, Petrogyphe Gallery, Sunset Auto, Star Dancer, Susan Carter, Jayne Childress, Ty Childress, Waystation Alehouse and Grill, Amy Frost, The Walters, Pam Taylor, Martha and John O’Leary, Heart of Gold Café, Joe and Melissa Earl, Oars Rafting Adventures, Bertapelle Cellars, Noreen Huberty, James Aarons, All Seasons Canvas and Compost, New York Fitness, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, The enrichment program students, and many more.

The Friends of Rail Road Flat School, first established in 2010, strives to preserve the rights of the students to continue receiving the best possible education within the community in which they live. By offering classes no longer available in the public school system, offering free community meals, and teacher support we hope to maintain this small historic school’s standing as the little school that can succeed despite its many obstacles. TFORRFS continue to charge forward with ways to support the school. Currently we are actively seeking opportunities to re-open the Rail Road Flat Ready to Learn Cooperative Pre School which ran out of its grant funding last school year. The pre-school is a vital life line to the school as it feeds new students into the kindergarten class. In turn it is also vital to the community as without a school the community will indeed feel the impact negatively. We are hoping to find some funding to re-open the pre-school which currently has a waiting list.
