Local Author Pens New Book Using Vintage Images to Share Wineries’ History

Murphys, CA... Explore the Wineries of the Gold Country - The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Wineries of the Gold Country by local author Sarah Lunsford. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images of vineyards in this California region....

Say the words “California Gold Rush” and images of miners plying glittering gold from streams and mines come to mind. But there is a larger story in the California Gold Country than just the discovery of this precious metal.

Immigrants from around the world rushed into the area, bringing with them their own languages and traditions in a quest for riches. One of those traditions was wine making, which, for some, would prove to be a greater boon than panning for gold as they discovered that the region’s soils and microclimates were ideal for vineyards.

Highlights of Wineries of the Gold Country include:
• Rarely seen before images, gathered from public and private collections of five counties.
• Shares stories from the area’s wineries, many of which are still family owned and operated with deep roots in cultivating vineyards and making wine in the region.
• Discusses how French and Italian immigrants brought their wine making techniques with them during the Gold rush, making the area a top producing wine region in the late 1800s.

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.

About the Author of Wineries of the Gold Country

Sarah Lunsford is a journalist in the Gold Country of California with over 15 years of experience writing about the people, places and history of the area.

A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and a turn at the historic Pembroke College at Cambridge University, England, have given Lunsford an appreciation of history and the people who made it.

Living in the historic town of Murphys and reporting about the Gold Rush area has given her a comprehensive perspective of the history of the area and its people, including the deep, intertwined roots the area has with not only the discovery of gold, but with agriculture and the generations of families that have made the area what it is today.

The interweaving of the wine making endeavors of those who came to mine gold and instead grew vineyards making wine from their endeavors, and the Wine Renaissance of today that began in the 1970s were fascinating to her and she was excited to dig more deeply into this connection when researching Wineries of the Gold Country.

What lasting impact do you hope your book will leave?

I hope that this book broadens people’s view of the Gold Country and the men and women who lived in the area during the Gold Rush along with those who live in the area today. Although the area’s history is undeniably tied to the gold that brought in immigrants from around the world, another story is told in the soil where vineyards and winemaking held great promise. This promise was only truly realized when the Wine Renaissance of the 1970s took hold, and has since grown into the award winning wine producing region of today.
