Newsome Harlow Raises Over $2,000 for Rim Fire Evacuees. Rim Fire Rekindles "Old Gulch Fire" Memories ~By John Hamilton (Updated)
Murphys, CA...(Updated: We contacted Newsome Harlow on this as we thought it was a great stroy!! Still do! This was not them seeking out a plug or free publicity. One thing we all need to remember is that life still goes on, plans have been made and commerce still needs to go forward. In our opinion Newsome Harlow did a great job not only providing a great experience for their visitors and customers but showed that Calaveras County is a good neighbor to those south of us! They should be commended for a genuinely wonderful act and donation!!) The Newsome Harlow Winery raised over $2,000 on Saturday Night that will go to Rim Fire Evacuees and Recovery Efforts. The Rim Fire brought back Old Gulch Fire memories for local winemaker Scott Klann. Newsome Harlow is donating a portion of their wine sales and they also accepted donations at their winemakers dinner at their winery. There were 180 people all enjoying a great night when as Scott Said “When we made the announcement about donating a portion of our sales a cheer went up from the crowd and many started donating cash and checks as well. My daughter went through the crowd and picked up their donations we will be able to donate $2,000 to the Tuolumne Area Foundation to assist the evacuees and Rim Fire expenses.”
The year was 1992 when then 23 year old Scott Klann worked his first “Crush” it was at Stevenot Winery under winemaker Chuck Hovey and the Old Gulch Fire had recently been lapping at edges of their vineyards. 21 years later Scott Klann has not only established himself as one of the areas premier winemakers, he and his team have made Newsome Harlow one of the rising stars in the Northern California wine industry.
But first and foremost Scott Klann is a local, long time Calaveras County resident and knows how fires like the Rim Fire and the Old Gulch Fire destroy not only property but etch memories that will last a lifetime for those who lost homes or defended their property or had to be evacuated out of the fire's way.
In 1992 the totals for the Old Gulch Fire were significant. It was at the time the largest fire burning in the state at over 17,000 acres. Calaveras County blaze destroyed 57 structures, of which 42 were homes, plus another 39 outbuildings and 58 vehicles.
