Stanislaus National Forest 2013 Artist in the Woods Selected

Sonora, CA...Stanislaus National Forest (NF) Supervisor Susan Skalski is pleased to announce the selection of Jim Marsh as one of the 2013 Artists in the Woods. The program solicited applications earlier this year from artists interested in creating a sense of stewardship for the beauty of the natural and cultural resources of the Stanislaus NF. The Stanislaus Artist in the Woods program provides professional artists of all media an opportunity to receive creative inspiration from the Sierra landscape, while pursuing their artistic discipline...

Marsh will stay in a cabin on the Calaveras Ranger District for two weeks in August and September. A stipend will be provided from the Three Forest Interpretive Association for meals, a portion of travel, and a small portion for supplies. In return, Marsh is asked to donate an original piece of work representative of his stay on the Stanislaus NF and conduct a workshop instructing the public in his discipline.

Marsh is a retired educator from Stockton. He is a musician, sketch artist; photographer and multi-media designer who combines the various media to produce programs that help people understand nature and our forests. He is one third of the acoustic trio, Mom’s Chili Boys, a popular string band in the Stockton area with five CDs to its credit.

During his workshop, students will learn techniques for improved observation skills while combining the benefits of nature journaling with music. The Sept. 14 workshop will be held in conjunction with the Hermit Valley Music Festival, part of the Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway Association’s 7th annual Scenic Celebration. For details on the festival, go to www. Scenic4.org.

After the morning workshop, participants can spend the rest of the day enjoying the festival while documenting their nature discoveries in the medium of their choice. The end result will be a multimedia program, A Morning in Hermit Valley that will include Marsh’s work and contributions from workshop participants. Marsh also will compose an original theme song for Ebbetts Pass.

The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. at Hermit Valley, located on Highway 4 in the Stanislaus National Forest, about 38 miles east of Arnold and 23 miles west of Markleeville on the North Fork of the Mokelumne River at about 7,000 foot elevation. The workshop is limited to 12 students at a cost of $30 per student. To register go to www.3forests.us/ or call Mike Needs for more information at (209) 795-1381 ext. 312. Registration deadline is Sept. 7.
