Launch of New Electronic Medical Record System Scheduled for September 4

Sonora, CA...Sonora Regional Medical Center is preparing to modernize the medical record system for all network clinics including primary care, specialty and Prompt Care clinics. Moving away from cumbersome paper charts, the Medical Center is implementing an electronic health records (EHR) system....

“This is an exciting time in healthcare,” says Medical Center President and CEO, Jeff Eller. “The practice of medicine is changing rapidly. Around the country, health systems, hospitals and clinics are modernizing their systems to the digital age, helping to improve care coordination, diminish errors and cut waste. Currently close to 80 percent of hospitals and more than 50 percent of physician practices have adopted an electronic health record and more are converting every day.”

On September 4, this new system will go live, allowing physicians to view more complete medical records across care settings within Adventist Health. With the click of a mouse, physicians will have access to important information such as patient history, test results, allergies, medication and immunizations.

By launching this EHR system, Sonora Regional Medical Center will become eligible for financial incentives from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for achieving “Meaningful Use” of EHR. In addition, the Medical Center will avoid financial penalties which take effect in 2015 for non-compliance with Meaningful Use.

Every network physician and office staffs at each clinic have undergone extensive training and are well prepared to use the new system. However, there may be a period of transition. In the first few days and weeks after launching the EHR, as physicians and office staffs adapt their practice to maintaining electronic patient charts, patients should be advised to allow just a few extra minutes for their office visit. As physicians and staff grow accustomed to the system, maintaining EHR will become much more efficient than paper charts.

The Medical Center has partnered with Cerner Corporation to install these new systems. Cerner is one of the largest medical software companies in the world. Its software is installed in over 10,000 health care facilities world-wide and over 45,000 physicians use their medical software.
