Fishing Report Hwy 4 Corridor September 24, 2013

Arnold, CA...The smoke has been gone now for two weeks and the fishing on the Highway 4 corridor is excellent. Trout plants for this week are the East and West Fork of the Carson River. Lake Alpine was planted this past week by Alpine County. Make sure to obtain a fire permit and call the Forestry Dept. at 209-795-1381 for up to date fire restrictions as we are still in a dangerous fire time. Make sure to check the weather before heading to the high country, as it can change quickly at this time of year. Deer season for D-6 opened this past weekend and D-5 opens this upcoming weekend, September 28. Good luck to all hunters...

Lake Alpine: If you are launching a boat at Lake Alpine, make sure the ramp has enough water as there is a sharp drop-off at the end. Trollers should try using Glitter Bugs, Wedding Rings, Needlefish, Thomas Speedy Shiner, and Triple Teazers behind your favorite flasher or dodger and tipped with a night-crawler. Bait casters should try using Berkley Garlic Power Bait, Mice Tails, Gulp Eggs, Garlic Power Eggs, Gulp Garlic Power Bait, Power Bait, Salmon Peach, and night-crawlers on a sliding sinker rig with a 30" leader. Fly fishermen should try using sparrow nymphs, woolly buggers, bead head nymphs, adams, BWO, parachute adams, female adams, mosquitos, royal wulff, and caddis flies. Lure fishermen should try Panther Martin spinners, Kastmasters, Rooster Tails, Mepps, and Thomas Bouyants.

Spicer: The ramp at Spicer is now about 30 feet out of the water so be careful while launching. Trollers should try Glitter Bugs, Wedding Rings, Apex, Needlefish, and Triple Teazers, behind a flasher or dodger tipped with a night-crawler, or a Berkley Trout Worm. Bait fishermen should try Berkley Garlic Power Bait, Garlic Power Eggs, Gulp Eggs, Mice Tails, Salmon Paech, Power Bait, and night-crawlers using a sliding sinker rig with a 30" leader. Lure casters should try using Panther Martin spinners, Rooster Tails, Mepps, Vibrax Bullet Fly, and Thomas Bouyants. Fly fishermen should try using sparrow nymphs, woolly buggers, ants, gnats, midge flies, bead head nymphs, mosquitos, caddis, hoppers, BWO, and PMD flies.

White Pines Lake: Has not been planted for a while and the water level is low, and it has been warm so fishing is tough. You can still fish off the dam. There is still a lot of bluegill in the lake which is fun for kids. Come by and I will show you how to catch these amazing fighting small fish.

The North Fork of the Stanislaus: The fishing is still great especially for the fly fishermen. There has been little pressure on the river due to the smoke conditions these past few weeks.

Fly fishermen should try woolly buggers, nymphs, bead head nymphs, October caddis, adams, parachute adams, female adams, blue dun, BWO, PMD, caddis, ants, and hoppers. Lure fishermen should try throwing Rapala's, Panther Martin spinners, Rooster Tails, Vibrax Bullet Fly, and Mepps. Bait casters should try Garlic Power Eggs, Gulp Eggs, crickets, and night crawlers on a split-shot rig with a 16" leader.

Beaver Creek. Low water conditions make it tough to fish for bait fishermen but fly fishermen and lure fishermen can still catch fish. The best place to fish Beaver is in Big Trees State Park.

Union Res: Union has not had any recent trout plants but can still be great fishing. Bait fishermen should try using Berkley Garlic Power Bait, Salmon Peach, Garlic Power Eggs, Gulp Garlic Power Bait, Mice Tails, night-crawlers, and crickets. Lure fishermen should try Panther Martin spinners, Mepps, Vibrax Bullet Fly, and Rooster Tails. Fly fishermen should try ants, mosquitos, bead head nymphs, caddis, hoppers, mcginty bees, crickets, adams, royal wulff, and midge flies.

We appreciate your patronage and look forward to seeing all of you.

Sincerely

Bill Reynolds
