Fine Art Exhibit to be Featured at Lumberjack Day October 6th!
West Point, CA..Artwork created by local artists will be featured in a gallery setting at Calaveras County’s 33rd annual Lumberjack Day held in West Point on Saturday, October 6. Stop by the Blue Mountain Youth Center at 364 Main Street, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, where the one-day only "gallery" will be set up displaying a range of art styles, from paintings to glass to collage. Additional features will be Art-in-Action, demos by artists, and old-timers recalling local lore and history. Entry is free. Visitors may vote for their favorite artwork, with the winning artist receiving a cash award....
Thanks to a generous donation from West Point resident Crane Souder, the art will be judged before the opening, resulting in "Best of Show" cash prizes of $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. Early sign-ups of artists include: Marianna Yoder, working in fused glass; Joanne Stivers in photography; Bonnie Gill in the oil/acrylic category; Jewell Foster, pastels; Dorothy Burnett, pine needle basketry; Vickie Chew, acrylic on stone; and Elizabeth Gosende, acrylic. Many more artists are expected.
This event is organized by The Arts Committee for the Northeast Corner of Calaveras. To provide more choices for Lumberjack Day attendees, members and volunteers will also be setting up a sidewalk café directly across from the "gallery" at the Blue Mountain Playhouse serving morning gourmet coffee and cookies and, back by popular demand, gourmet lunches. The sandwiches come from Andrae’s Bakery and Cheese Shop in Amador City, and the delicious salad plates are prepared by Ron Brickman. Local wine and boutique beers will also be available.
Proceeds will help fund another focus of the committee which is to present a performing arts series of concerts to enliven the entertainment opportunities of local residents throughout the fall, winter and spring. The first concert will be October 21 in the Rail Road Flat Town Hall featuring world-renowned guitarist Jaume Torrent from Barcelona, Spain, performing with international concert violinists Joseph Gold and Debbie Dare. Torrent is one of Spain’s most prominent guitarists, performing extensively in concerts throughout Europe, Latin American and the US.
Future concerts will be in Glencoe, West Point and Wilseyville. Any revenue earned beyond expenses from the committee’s activities will support scholarships for local youth to attend summer arts camps or to pursue training in the visual and performing arts.
Members of the Arts Committee include Mary Agatha, Elizabeth Gosende, Vicki Snead-Hinckle, Penny West, Ron Brickman, Edie Schembri, Marleen Olive, Judy Sweet, Crane Souder, and Claire Coykendall. For information about the art show, call (209)293-4068 For info on the concerts, call (209)293-4227.
