Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) Awards Grants

Angels Camp, CA....Focusing on two newly developed initiatives: Aging in Place for Seniors and Support for Learning of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has awarded nine grants for 2013 amounting to over $37,000. CCF was very pleased to receive 25 applications for grants to implement the above initiatives. With an increased upper grant limit of $10,000, much interest in the initiatives was generated and applicants pulled out the stops to design and submit excellent projects for funding....

Four applicants were awarded grants that concentrated on our aging senior population. Calaveras County Senior Center to install energy-efficient window blinds and purchase entertainment equipment; Common Ground Senior Services, Inc. to provide home delivered meals; Mother Lode Office of Catholic Charities to provide home modifications; and Murphys Senior Center also to provide home modifications. CCF has provided significant financial support for projects benefiting our community seniors. These grants expand that tradition to help seniors remain in their homes and age with health, safety and dignity.

Steve Stetzline, Executive Director, Murphys Senior Center states: “It is very important to keep older adults in their own homes as long as possible. Through this grant, CCF has shown its commitment to making this happen.”

Five grants relating to the STEM initiative were awarded. Calaveras High School – Marine Biology, Remotely Operated Vehicles; Mountain Oaks School – Electronics and Soldering Workshop; Stewardship Through Education, LLC-Watershed Alive Teen Team; Friends of Rail Road Flat School – Lego Robotics; Valley Springs Youth – Kaleidoscope Your World. These projects are varied, exciting and give our youth a taste of what is possible with studies concentrating on science, technology, engineering and math.

Friends of Rail Road Flat School Secretary, Autumn Andahl shares: “Thanks to this grant from CCF, we will be able to purchase and implement a LEGO robotics learning program. The purchase of LEGO robotic kits will enable students without formal training in engineering and computer programming to design, build and program small scale robots.”

As usual, there were many more applications submitted than CCF was able to fund. CCF is grateful to our corporate supporters and individual donors whose generosity enables CCF to fund these worthwhile project’s causes. Since it’s inception in 2000, CCF has provided more than $715,000 in competitive grants, scholarships and assistance.
