The Salvation Army and Their Red Kettles Are Helping Here At Home
San Andreas, CA...You see them every year at this time – the bright red kettles of the Salvation Army – often accompanied by a volunteer ringing a bell. You see them in most cities and counties, including in our own Calaveras County. But many residents are unaware there is a Salvation Army Service Extension Unit right here in San Andreas. The Calaveras County Service Extension Unit of the Salvation Army is made up of a 10-person board of volunteers plus a field representative advisor from the Salvation Army. Because we are not large enough to have a Salvation Army Corps Center, we are invisible and most residents do not know we offer assistance year-round to those in need....
The Calaveras County Salvation Army Service Extension Unit oversees the emergency needs of local residents and assists them with such emergency items as food, temporary lodging, propane and gas vouchers, utilities, medications, and transportation. Other needs are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and assistance is offered whenever possible.
The local unit also sponsors a campership program for local children, organizes a county-wide coat drive for the winter season, and assists with food for Santa’s Express during the holidays. Funds are also used to assist Calaveras County fire victims.
The Salvation Army is located in 80 nations around the world. William Booth was the Founder of “The Salvation Army”, which was originally called “The Christian Mission”, but they referred to themselves as “The Hallelujah Army”. In 1878 General Superintendent Booth, while proof reading the annual report, crossed out the words “volunteer army” and penciled in “a salvation army” and the name stuck. In 1879, the first Salvation Army meeting was held in Philadelphia and by 1883 The Salvation Army was coast to coast.
Donations to San Francisco or other areas still go for good causes, but none of that money is routed to Calaveras County. So please consider the Salvation Army for your annual donation list, and please make your donations local.
For assistance, clients can access services at either the Resource Connection Food Bank 754-1257 or Calaveras Works and Human Services 754-6855, both in San Andreas.
