Want to Get Your Family Excited About Snowsports? The Sun Is Your Friend! ~By John Hamilton

Bear Valley, CA....If you are looking at getting your family away from their "Screen Addictions" and outside to play now is actually the perfect time. The sunny skies and beginner to moderate terrain that are typically available under early season and man made conditions are learning time. These conditions are your best friends to building a life long relationship with snow for your family. Coming from someone who has driven tens of thousands of miles in snow and blizzard conditions. I have also acted as a human pack mule for skis, boots, poles, ski clothes, extra race equipment, kids of various ages and more in all sorts of weather....trust me when I say that sun and moderate snow amounts are your best friends for keeping your family as excited for their next trip to the ski resort as their first. This is especially true when skiing and riding skills are in their infancy...

We included a clip of young Austrians learning to ski. Since they seemingly can win World Cup races while still in diapers. The group above seems quite mortal though...

Getting the newbies up and skiing and practicing their "Pizza" or "Snow Plows" in the sun on freshly groomed runs early in the season is the right way to get them started. As the snow thickens and their skills build moving on to more challenging terrain and weather conditions is just a logical step in their development.

Conversely if you want to drive any desire for snowsports out of your young family members the best way to do it might be to take them for their first day on a February day during or after and one of those legendary Sierra storms that dump feet upon feet of snow.

It will take longer to get to the resort. Most likely they will get cold and wet fairly quickly, especially if they are new and are spending more time in the snow than on it. The crowds will be larger, lift lines longer, and on and on. The path of least resistance for beginners after a big storm is to just sit in the lodge.

While deep powder is heaven for the experts and the adrenalin junkies for beginners it is just too hard for them to get downhill in, much less enjoy. There are even more safety issues with deep snow and people unfamiliar with it.

So if you want your offspring to ride a chairlift instead of just a chair and enjoy ski poles more than game controllers now is your time.

Not only that the ski resorts and the economy will thank you!
