Miss Calaveras, Saddle Queen and Junior Fair Board Provide Unique Opportunities For Calaveras Teens

Frogtown, CA....Local high school students have unique opportunities to shine at the 2014 Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee – the Miss Calaveras Scholarship Pageant, the Calaveras Saddle Queen Competition and the Junior Fair Board. The Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee is May 15-18 at Frogtown in Angels Camp....

Miss Calaveras Scholarship Pageant – Applications are now available for the annual competition which highlights opening night of the Fair on Thursday, May 15. The pageant welcomes young women ages 17-23 who reside in Calaveras County and maintain a 2.0 grade point average. Since Miss Calaveras serves as a role model for young women in the community, ideal candidates are those with a warm, outgoing personality who are intelligent, articulate, charming, talented, sincere and healthy in mind and body.

Contestants attend several pre-fair events and rehearsals prior to the pageant. Nine different scholarships ranging from $100 to $1,000 are awarded in the Miss Calaveras competition. The pageant includes four areas of competition – Interview, Health and Fitness, Talent and Evening Gown.

Calaveras Saddle Queen Competition – This opportunity for young women more comfortable in an arena than on stage has become one of the Fair’s signature events. It is held the afternoon of opening day, with contestants judged on their interview skills as well as their horsemanship abilities. A “Ranch Work” category is new to the competition this year. The Fair’s scholarship fund will award $2,000 in cash awards to the top three competitors.

Junior Fair Board – Junior and senior high school students have real hands-on and behind-the-scenes experiences when serving on the Junior Fair Board. They help with exhibits, logistics and other aspects of the Fair and also assist the Frog Jump Committee in staging the International Jumping Frog Jubilee.

Bret Harte and Calaveras high school juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative 2.5 grade point average are encouraged to apply. An appreciation for the community and a passion for the Fair and Frog Jump are a plus for applicants. Junior Fair Board members must attend one pre-fair meeting and commit to working two days during the Fair.

Applications for Miss Calaveras, Saddle Queen and JuniorFair Board are available at the Fairgrounds office, Bret Harte and Calaveras high school and at www.frogtown.org.
