The Murphys Historic Hotel’s 7th Annual Super Bowl Chili Cook Off!
Murphys, CA....This year marked the 7th Annual Super Bowl Chili Cook Off held here at The Murphys Historic Hotel. It was the first “Chilly” day this year but it didn’t stop the 17 Teams and 176 Tasters from having a Great Time! The 17 teams competed for “The Grand Champion” Judges Choice Award & 4 People’s Choice Awards that included the “Best Theme”Award. This year we helped raise $1420.00 for “Hospice of Amador & Calaveras” and 135 cans of food for “The Resource Connection” (Calaveras County Food Bank). These totals are more than double from our 1st Annual in 2008, this was our Best Year Yet! This is always a great community-supported event!

This year’s Judge’s were Marcy Camacho, Sous Chef at Camacho’s Restaurant in Sonora, Bernard Ingram, Site Manager of Mercer Caverns, Murphys, Gage, Sous Chef at Angelo’s Steak House, Murphys, and Michael Olivera, Semi-Retired Sheriff Deputy/ Angels P.D. , Calaveras County. After a lot of tasting & a very close decision the “Grand Champion” Judge’s Award was given to “Rotary Club of West Calaveras” represented by Dave Schmedes & Lynette Martinez. The People’s Choice Awards were very close: 1st Place Winning Team: “Two Guy’s Smoking” (Arnold Pantry) represented by Donny Kimber & Chip Roberts. 2nd Place Winning Team: “The V Bistro” (Lucky Number 7) represented by Jacques Toupe & Heather Tindle. 3rd Place Winning Team: “Darby’s Liquid Plumbing” (Darby Plumbing) represented by Rick Darby & Marcia Thompson. Last but not least was the winner of Best Theme: “Love Street” represented by Lauren Robinson & Justin Kuchman. Wearing their 70’s themed costumes they looked Great! This also marked their 2 year anniversary from meeting each other. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the smell of chili or Love in the air, I know with the huge turn out there was a lot of both.
I would really like to give special thanks to all the chili cookers who spent countless hours and money on their wonderful chili, to the judges, all of the tasters who beat the chilly weather by eating chili, and of course all of the local businesses who donated all of the awesome prizes we couldn’t do this without you!
