Air layering Is Demo Topic At Calaveras Bonsai Club
San Andreas, CA...Air layering, the technique of removing a section of tree trunk or a large tree branch in order to create another tree, is an advanced design method in the art of bonsai. This will be demonstrated by Joan Scroggs at the Calaveras Bonsai Club’s meeting on Saturday, March 1 at the former Calaveras County Water District office, located at 423 E. St. Charles Street (Hwy. 49) in San Andreas.
As club sensei (teacher), Scroggs will conduct the free public demonstration immediately following the 10 a.m. meeting. “The most common reason for air layering is to shorten the height of a tree trunk and make it look natural,” said Scroggs. “You start by girdling, or carefully removing the cambium and phloem layers in a thin ring around the circumference of the trunk. The cut is then treated with root compound, coated with wet sphagnum moss and finally, covered with plastic and sealed. Given adequate nutrients over time, the site will sprout roots. At that point, the new growth can be removed and planted as a shorter bonsai.”
The repotted tree and container will be donated by Sacramento area bonsai grower, David Anderson. Following the demonstration, the finished bonsai will be offered as a raffle item with proceeds benefitting the club.
The Calaveras Bonsai Club is not limited to residents of Calaveras County and welcomes everyone with an interest in this ancient form of living art. For more information, call Paul Van Natta at (209) 786-3264 or visit the club website at calaverasbonsai.org.
