BE THE MATCH Marrow Registry Drive in Support of Paul Sorensen

Bear Valley, CA....Saturday, March 8th at Bear Valley Mountain from 10:30 a.m. -2:00 p.m., all are invited to register for Be the Match (National Marrow Registry) in support of Paul Sorensen. The Marrow Donor drive will take place after 10:30 am when the Nickolay Dodov Slopestyle event sign in is finished. There are many locals helping to stage and plan this drive, and we are hopeful for a large turnout. Paul, a long-time local and avid skier, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a rare blood cancer this past January. He has already undergone several rounds of chemotherapy. Further treatment calls for a marrow/blood stem cell transplant once the cancer is in remission....

Although Paul’s family is being tested for compatibility, over 70 percent of those looking for a marrow match depend on the generosity of strangers. who have registered with. Each year over 12,000 adults and children search Be The Match for a second chance at life.

Eligibility
BloodSource has teamed up with Bear Valley Mountain to help add to the national marrow registry. Donors must be in good health, age 18-44 years, and willing to donate to anyone who is searching. All it takes is paperwork and a simple cotton swab inside your cheek.

Visit bloodsource.org/donate for more information on marrow registry and donation. If you are unable to attend this drive, please visit bethematch.org to learn how to get a kit sent to your home to become a marrow donor.

One in 540 Be The Match registrants will go on to donate for a patient in need. Today, donation technologies have evolved so that in most cases, marrow/blood stem cell donation is a simpler, outpatient procedure. YOU can be the one to save a life like Paul’s and keep a family together.

If you can’t make it to the event or want to do more, please consider donating blood in support of Paul at any BloodSource donor center or mobile blood drive. Patients searching for marrow matches are often using blood before, during or after their transplants. Paul’s life has been forever changed by the generous blood donations made by so many anonymous donors, and he is so thankful for this wonderful gift.

Paul Sorensen’s bio:

Paul Sorensen is an active, positive resident of our wonderful Ebbett’s Pass corridor. Moving to the area in October 2000 and building a home in Big Trees Village area was a dream come true. Paul and his wife Ann, married since 1983, have a local bookkeeping service by the name of Soaring Eagle. They do books for many local businesses, as well as a loyal following from the Reno/Tahoe area where they moved from.
Paul’s family fell in love with the Arnold area in 1976, also the year they purchased a cabin in Arnold’s Fly In Acres subdivision. Ann and Paul would frequently come to visit and stay in the Arnold area to get away from the crazy tourism of Lake Tahoe. They were so excited to have the opportunity to move to the area and make their dreams of living here come true.

Paul and Ann are very active in the local community. They enjoy riding their Tandem Mountain Bike when the weather permits on the local forest roads. Skiing is their true love, with an average of 100 days spent at Bear Valley Mountain or Nordic at Bear Valley Cross Country Center, as the snow allows. Getting out for rides on their Dual Sport Motorcycles has also been fighting for recreation time.

Out of all this wonderful living came a real shock to our reality in January. Paul had been feeling poorly, thinking he may have a case of the Flu bug which has been going around. After having a blood test, it was revealed Paul was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a rare form of this scary blood cancer. What a shock this was to their world. They went from the day to day of running our life and business to being in a whole different point of view. Paul and Ann definitely live more in the moment now, knowing “being in the now” is truly what we have control of.

Moving forward now, Paul is undergoing multiple Chemotherapy sessions with periods of healing at home in between. The ultimate goal and cure for this disease is to put the cancer into remission, and then to receive a marrow transplant. Paul has been given a 90% cure rate with this disease assuming he stays healthy and responds accordingly to the treatments.

The outpouring of love and support Paul & Ann have received has been truly overwhelming. They have had so many people step up to help out and offer their assistance in this trying time. Bear Valley Mountain Resort and BloodSource will be hosting a Marrow Donor drive in Paul’s honor on Saturday, March 8th. As Paul and Ann spend so many days enjoying Bear Valley each year, it seemed a natural place to host the event.

The Marrow Donor drive will take place after 10:30 am when the Nickolay Dodov Slopestyle event sign in is finished. There are many local’s helping to stage and plan this drive, and we are hopeful for a large turnout.

Paul’s family is currently being tested to be matches for marrow donors. However 70% of those who need a donation do not have a match in their family; over 12,000 adults and children are looking for outside donors each year.

We wanted to take the opportunity to sign on many more healthy individuals to be a possible bone marrow donor for Paul or other amazing people looking for a match. All it takes to be entered in the National Marrow Registry is a cotton swab inside your cheek. Donors must be in good health, age 18-44, and willing to donate to anyone who is searching. Today science has evolved marrow donation to be an outpatient procedure and you can be back at work in 2 days. Not a bad deal for helping to save a life.

If you can’t make it to the event or want to do more, please consider donation blood in support of Paul. Receiving blood products is something most people probably don’t think much about until there is a need. Paul’s life has been forever changed by the generous blood donations made by so many anonymous donors, and He is so thankful for this wonderful gift. Visit www.bethematch.org for more information on donating blood, marrow donation, or how to get a kit at home to become a marrow donor.
