Sonora Regional Medical Center Introducing MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing

February 26, 2014 (Sonora, CA) —The Center for Joint Replacement at Sonora Regional Medical Center held an open house on Tuesday to introduce its latest advanced technology. MAKOplasty® is a minimally invasive, robot-assisted surgery option for adults living with knee pain. This procedure is for those with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis that has not yet progressed to all three compartments of the knee. The Medical Center is the first to acquire this technology in the region and is one of just 161 hospitals out of over 5,500 in the nation to offer MAKOplasty®....

MAKOplasty® is performed using RIO®, a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic arm system. Those who attended the open house had an opportunity to “Meet the Robot,” meet patients who have had the surgery, and talk with surgeons about the procedure. The Medical Center also launched a “Name the Robot” campaign which will run through March 24. An iPad Mini will be awarded to the winner of the “Name the Robot” contest. To enter, visit www.SonoraJointReplacement.org. The winner will be selected by a panel of orthopedic surgeons and announced on March 28.

Airell Nygaard, MD, Medical Director of the Center for Joint Replacement at Sonora Regional Medical Center, led the efforts to acquire this state-of-the-art technology for our community. Explaining some of the benefits, Dr. Nygaard states, “This addition to our joint replacement program advances our care of the arthritic patient beyond many of the larger hospitals or joint replacement centers that do not yet have this technology or surgeons trained to perform this robotic-assisted surgery. Remarkable precision is now possible with implantation of a partial joint replacement and can be done with smaller incisions and less invasive techniques. This allows us to preserve the bone or ligaments not affected by the arthritic wear and tear, especially for the middle-aged person not interested in, or not a candidate for, complete knee replacement. Recoveries are faster and easier and return to activities is much sooner.”

MAKOplasty® potentially offers the following benefits as compared to total knee surgery:
Reduced pain
Minimal hospitalization
More rapid recovery
Less implant wear and loosening
Smaller scar
Better motion and a more natural feeling knee

The RIO® system enables the surgeon to complete a patient specific pre-surgical plan using a CT scan of the patient’s knee. During the procedure, the system creates a three-dimensional, virtual view of the patient’s bone surface and correlates the image to the pre-programmed surgical plan. As the surgeon uses the robotic arm, the RIO® system provides tactile, auditory and visual feedback, limiting the bone preparation to the just the diseased areas. This process helps preserve more of the patient’s knee while providing optimal positioning of the implant. Sonora Regional Medical Center has five orthopedic surgeons trained to perform MAKOplasty®.

The opportunity for early intervention is important as osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of disability worldwide, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Call the Center for Joint Replacement at 536-3366 for more information and to find out if you might be a good candidate for MAKOplasty®.
