Calaveras Uncorked: Frogtown Hosts Annual Wine Competition
Frogtown, CA ... April 12 is the deadline for entries in the Professional Wine Show held each year in conjunction with the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The Fair and the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance team up each year to present this competition. Wine must be produced from grapes grown in Calaveras or eight surrounding counties – or the winery must be in those locations...
Counties eligible are Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, Sierra or Tuolumne. The Danish System of Judging will be used in private blind testing on May 2 at the Fairgrounds in Angels Camp.
There are five divisions with multiple classes in each – Red Table Wine (21 classes); Blush & Rose Table Wine (4 classes); Sparkling Wine (4 classes); White Table Wine (13 classes) and Dessert-Fortified Wine ( 13 classes). Gold, silver and bronze medallions will be awarded in each class. Best of Show will be presented in the red, white and dessert divisions – plus Best of Show for Calaveras County Red Wine from Calaveras Fruit, Calaveras County White Wine from Calaveras Fruit and Calaveras Dessert Wine.
Entries must be bottled under bond by a commercial winery and must be commercially labeled. There is an entry fee of $15 per entry, per class and a limit of three entries per exhibitor, per class. All entries become property of the 39th District Agricultural Association (39thDAA)and will not be returned.
Submit three bottles per entry; bottle size (1) 750ml or (2) 375ml. For varietals, grape type must be clearly stated on the label. Submit finished products only, no barrels.
All entries must reach the Fairgrounds office on or before April 12 at 5 p.m. You can either mail or deliver entries. Mail to P. O. Box 489, Angels Camp, CA 95222 or deliver to 101 Frogtown Road, Angels Camp, CA95222. Include entry form, fees and wine together – place entry form and fees in a separate envelope and attached to top of the box. Make checks payable to 39thDAA.
