Thank You Bear Valley As Dodge Ridge Closes After Very Short Season ~By John Hamilton

Bear Valley, CA....With Dodge Ridge announcing that they are now closed probably until next winter we thought it would be a good time to say Thank You to Bear Valley!! In back to back brutal snow winters they have opened early and have kept the seasons rolling. They have provided a full range of special events, great conditions even with what mother nature didn't give them. Every morning the bull-wheels start turning, coffee is brewed and consumed, ski patrol blesses the terrain, and lift ops welcome skiers and boarders...

The current ownership group should be saluted for the millions they have invested over the last decade. They haven't always been treated the best by even Calaveas County Government. As they look to sell to the next group that will pick up where they have left off they deserve our thanks for the vision they had and for keeping the wheels turning during some very turbulent financial times.

Bear Valley is a very special place and a great family destination. If we could wave our magic wand it would be wonderful for the current ownership group to dust off their plans and move forward with the next stage in BV's future.

Many of the current ownership group joined because yes, they hoped to earn a return on their investment but they also did it because they thought it would be fun to be part of an ownership group akin to owning a pro-sports franchise, a winery, or a high volume restaurant.

We know it has been a struggle with forces external and internal but at the end of the day the show has gone on. Above all thank you for that. This year we need to look just a few miles south to see how fortunate this area is. Instead of a few brief weeks our area has had a full and continuing winter season.

There is something magical about the resort. When the wheels start turning, lifts load their first passengers of the day, first tracks down hopefully powder or freshly groomed corduroy are made and life at the top of our hill is as it should be for another day.

We have always seen Bear Valley Resort as an integral part of our future as it and amenities like Bear Valley Cross Country, Murphys and our wine region, Arnold, Big Trees, Frogtown, Ironstone, Greenhorn Creek, and the rest of our entertainment, recreational and outdoor venues that will attract the next wave of young families, entrepreneurs, and retirees that will push the economy forward.

This area is moving like other areas from what were largely resource economy jobs to tourism, tech and where people live and work based on lifestyle and community options. Now instead of just timber, construction or development, our area needs to compete on how our communities compete in all areas and Bear Valley even for those who may never take a run is a big part of that! Thanks again Bear Valley for keeping the wheels turning!!
