Grant Barrett For Superior Court Judge

Calaveras County, CA....Grant Barrett has served the legal needs of the Calaveras community for the past 18 years. He has over 12 years of experience on the bench in Calaveras County. Since 2006, Grant has served our community as the Calaveras Superior Court Commissioner where he regularly presides over family law and civil disputes. From 2011 through 2013, he also served as Court Commissioner for Amador County Superior Court, at their judges’ request, until a suitable replacement could be recruited and trained. In 2013, Grant was named Judicial Officer of the Year by the Child Support Directors Association of California.

Prior to his appointment as commissioner, Grant served as General Counsel for Calaveras Superior Court conducting legal research for the judges in both criminal and civil matters. Additionally, since 2001 he has served Calaveras Superior Court as judge pro tem presiding over civil and family law case management hearings, settlement conferences, and small claims trials. He still performs these tasks in addition to his duties as Court Commissioner.

In local private practice before joining the court, Grant represented parties in family law, real estate, and business disputes, as well as providing pro-bono legal services helping local charities to incorporate and establish governance structures. He drafted the incorporating documents and served on the boards of the Calaveras Community Foundation and the Friends of the Calaveras County Library, Valley Springs Chapter. Additionally, he served as counsel in criminal cases, representing the accused throughout all stages of criminal proceedings from arraignment through trial. Finally, he served as court appointed counsel for children and indigent parents in family law, juvenile dependency, and juvenile delinquency proceedings.

Grant graduated with honors from Empire College School of Law in 1995. Prior to law school he graduated with honors from California State University at Hayward in 1991 earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Grant served in the United State Army Reserve from 1985 until his honorable discharge in 1993.

Grant lives in the Valley Springs community with his wife Janice. In his private time Grant enjoys spending time with his family and friends, photography, marksmanship, gardening, and outdoor activities.

His broad legal experience, dedication to our community, and commitment to fairness under the law qualify Grant Barrett as the right choice for Calaveras County Superior Court Judge, Department One.
