He still performs these tasks in addition to his duties as Court Commissioner.

In local private practice before joining the court, Grant represented parties in family law, real estate, and business disputes, as well as providing pro-bono legal services helping local charities to incorporate and establish governance structures. He drafted the incorporating documents and served on the boards of the Calaveras Community Foundation and the Friends of the Calaveras County Library, Valley Springs Chapter. Additionally, he served as counsel in criminal cases, representing the accused throughout all stages of criminal proceedings from arraignment through trial. Finally, he served as court appointed counsel for children and indigent parents in family law, juvenile dependency, and juvenile delinquency proceedings.

Grant graduated with honors from Empire College School of Law in 1995.
