Beware of PG&E Phone Scam
Sonora, CA....On 3/19/14 several businesses in Tuolumne County were the target of a scam by a person representing himself as a PG&E employee. The caller targeted restaurants or cafes within the county and advised them their PG&E payment was late and they needed to pay immediately via wire transfer or their power would be shut off. The caller provides a call back number that goes to an answering machine at “PG&E” The suspect returns the calls and attempts to pressure the business owner into paying the bill as soon as possible to avoid the power being shut off to the business. The suspect was able to defraud one local business owner of approximately five hundred dollars....
This is a phone scam PG&E does not operate in this fashion. If any residents or businesses receive or have received these types of phone calls they are asked to contact the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office or PG&E.
The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating this phone scam.
