Chelsea Ruthrauff Pursues Future in Medicine

San Andreas, CA ... Miss Calaveras 2013 Chelsea Ruthrauff, a freshman at Sonoma State University majoring in biology, dreams of attending medical school to become a doctor. "I have been interested in medicine since I was in 7th grade, I discovered my passion during my senior year of high school," remembers Chelsea,"I had the chance to enroll in the ROP medical program at Calaveras High School and volunteer on the ambulance throughout the year. I learned a great deal of information about all kinds of patient care and what it is like to work in the medical field. I not only obtained my first aid and CPR certifications, but am now a certified phlebotomist (a person who draws blood). I have great expectations for my future in medicine."

"I was recently, blessed with an incredible opportunity. Through a program at my school, I have a once in a lifetime chance to travel to Nicaragua and Costa Rica to volunteer in the medical clinics there. At this point in my life, the biggest thing I need, when it comes to accomplishing my goal, is medical experience. Taking part in this program would give me the opportunity to not only help a great number of people in need, but also experience hands-on medicine. I will take part in a training session and then spend two weeks tending to patients in the clinics while doctors observe. I won't be watching the doctors...they'll be watching and critiquing me! I'll get a taste of what life is like in these other countries and I'll gain experience diagnosing and treating diseases that we don't encounter very often in the United States.
"Once I become a doctor, one of my goals is to participate in Doctor's Without Borders. This would be a great chance for me to get a jump start on what could be a global chance to make a difference in the world. On top of all of that, these people need our help! This is my chance to use my skills to assist those in need.
"I'm ecstatic about making this dream come true! I have estimated my costs (the training program, flights, living expenses, etc) to be around $3,000. with the help of my family and community, this dream can become a reality.
"I'm searching for sponsors and reaching out to anyone who can help me achieve this goal. I really appreciate that you keep me in your prayers. Growing up in Calaveras County has taught me a great deal about the importance of community. We are blessed to live in a place where we know we can count on our neighbors for support. Any help that you can offer would be appreciated more than you can ever know."
