American Red Cross Capital Region Sends Local Volunteers to Aid Washington Mudslide Relief Efforts

Sacramento, CA...The American Red Cross Capital Region has deployed three volunteers and one staff member to aid in response efforts following the catastrophic mudslide that swept through a Washington community on Saturday morning...

“The situation in Washington is simply heartbreaking, and we are saddened by the tremendous loss this community has experienced,” said Kathleen Weis, Chief Executive Officer of the Red Cross Capital Region. “We are proud to have such a dedicated group of volunteers ready to respond and help bring comfort through this tragedy.”

The Capital Region volunteers will join a Red Cross team of nearly 100 trained workers from Washington and around the country to provide support in the impacted communities. Since Saturday, the Red Cross has served more than 2,200 meals and snacks and handed out dozens of comfort kits.

Additionally, Red Cross Mental Health volunteers have been providing emotional support and comfort to those impacted as the situation continues to develop..

WHAT YOU CAN DO

We understand that people around the country want to help and we appreciate that support. Right now, the Red Cross has what it needs to support this event both financially and with relief supplies.

However, this tragedy is a reminder that emergencies can happen in any community at any time. While the Red Cross has all it needs to respond to this event, we do need the public’s support to respond to the nearly 70,000 other disasters we handle every year around the country and in Washington. To help us prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small, please make a donation to Red Cross Disaster Relief.

There are other ways people can help:

Register for a Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED course so that you can be better prepared to help in future emergencies.
Download the free Red Cross First Aid App which puts free and simple lifesaving information in the hands of smart phone and tablet users. The app is available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. The Capital Region serves a twenty-four county territory including Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba counties.
