Flu Vaccination Clinics to be Held in Calaveras County Continues Through December 3rd ~From Terry Maxwell
The schedule for this year’s flu vaccination clinics for the Calaveras County Public Health Department has been released. Local health officials are recommending that the public make plans for receiving flu vaccine this fall and winter. “Many people do not consider flu a serious illness. But even in a normal flu season it causes 36,000 deaths a year in the U.S. and more than 200,000 hospitalizations” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer....
Recent national data indicates seriously low influenza vaccination rates in both adults and children. Influenza can lead to pneumonia and can be dangerous for people with heart or breathing conditions. Children under age 2 years are at higher risk for hospitalization from high fever or seizures if they get the flu.
“Annual flu vaccinations help protect individuals against flu and also reduce the spread of the virus to others” Dr. Kelaita stated. Flu vaccine has been demonstrated to reduce the severity of the illness in infected persons. It also prevents hospitalization and death among the elderly, young children and persons with chronic medical conditions. Vaccine is recommended for the following persons:
• Adults over age 50
• Children 6 months up to 5 years of age
• Persons with chronic medical conditions (including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, cancer)
• Women who will be pregnant during the flu season
• Healthy household contacts of persons with chronic health conditions
• Healthy household contacts of children under age 5 and adults over age 50
• Health care workers
Immunization is important for health care workers as they are in close contact with high risk persons. People who are in close contact with children younger than 6 months of age should also be immunized with flu vaccine. This includes parents, grandparents, siblings, and child care workers. “Flu vaccination provides protection to family, friends, school children and co-workers”, said Dr. Kelaita.
Community flu clinics in Calaveras County will be held during late October – December, 2007. Flu immunizations will continue to be available at the Health Department’s
regularly scheduled immunization clinics throughout December, 2007 and January, 2008.
