Paul Stein to Moderate April 16 District 3 Candidates Forum in Murphys

Murphys, CA ... Former County Supervisor Paul Stein will moderate a forum featuring Mike Borean, Merita Callaway, and Mike Oliveira, the three candidates hoping to serve District 3 residents as their County Supervisor for the next four years. Organized by the Murphys Community Club and the Murphys Business Association, the Town Hall Meeting will be held in the Native Sons Hall on Wednesday, April 16 starting at 7 p.m.The Native Sons of the Golden West Hall is located at 389 Main St., Murphys, CA. During the forum, each candidate will make short opening and closing statements. They will be asked a series of questions by Stein, and there will be questions posed by members of the audience....

Stein is replacing Joel Metzger who recently resigned as editor of the Calaveras Enterprise and is no longer available. “Paul certainly knows the county issues, and has moderated many forums such as ours,” said Sue Friedman, Murphys Community Club president. “We very much appreciate his willingness to take on this assignment. We look forward to a lively discussion.”

Stein was elected Supervisor of District 2 in 1997 and served two terms. He was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors in 1999 and 2003.

Why Stein?

Why would anyone want Paul Stein to moderate the so called debate? Is Paul Stein a neutral voice or is it possible he might favor the person he served with on the Board? I don't know the answer but I would definately question the wisdom of having a former Board member who worked closely with another Board member who happens to be running for the hundreth time. It would seem appropriate to have a moderator who has no skin in the game because as we have seen in other debates the moderator can steer the debate as they choose. If I were running for the office I would think hard about this choice of a moderator and whether this individual will treat each person fairly. Just saying!

When you criticize someone, and imply he might be dishonest, don't you think you should be brave enough to sign your name and be accountable for your unsupported opinions? Don't know this person, but the criticism is certainly unfair. He might just hate the incumbent, as you seem to.

Not dishonest, maybe a bit bias. There is a difference. I just think the moderator should be someone other than a person who has served with one of the people running for the office. I have no dog in the fight other than to make sure the process is fair. I thought all you libs loved fairness?

District 3 Race

Just came back from the debate. Paul did a good job of being neutral and maintaining an even playing field. Mike Oliveira is bombastic and scary, and doesn't seem to think much of how Calaveras County is, so watch out! Contradicted himself repeatedly. Mike Borean did a good job for someone new to running for a public office and handled the shooting at candy rock issue very well. Merita has been a voice of reason and experience and inclusion over the years and I am grateful she is willing to run again. As she said, she is honest and transparent, works hard to represent all of the interests of the district, can stand up to bullies, and doesn't have an agenda or conflicts of interest. She has my vote again, gratefully!

Paul did a fair job, I agree. Merita is a very nice person.
But, I cannot continue to support her. She does not take
the $8.1 million budget deficit serious. Her answer to
The people "pay your property taxes on time". How about
stop mis-managing our tax dollars Merita?
    CalPers is $18 million unfunded.
Mike Borean, was very well spoken. But relies on his notes too
Much. The Candy Rock area where people shoot appears to
be a big issue. They both are for closing this area, but would not provide an alternative for the people. This concerns me more than the closure. I am not aware of any accidental shootings at Candy Rock.
But, not providing an alternative is going to result in people
    Shooting in unsafe areas.
Mike Oliviera seemed to show a lot of passion, but knew the topics being discussed. Was concerned about the safety of
the people and appeared to have budget experience. I think the crisis
We are in now, I will take the safety and budget concerns as my priority
and most likely vote for Oliviera! Good clean candidates nightt. I appreciated that!

We noticed the notes too! Did Mike Borean have the questions in advance? He used his notes for all of Pauls questions. But, when the audience asked questions he did not seen to be as composed. Merita and the other Mike not have any notes. Interesting observations!

Part of the political discussion was touched on here but I would like to see more of it. When are we going to reach a breaking point with the salaries and benefits accorded government employees? When compared to any real world business that has to bring dollars to a bottom line, this is craziness and should be changed. There are far more people in the wings wanting jobs and willing to work for more reasonable rates than the current/past supervisors even considered. Are the managers living in 'fear' that their staff will leave if we bring payroll into current market levels? Where is the accountability here? What a racket, we have given the elected representatives the power to be ridiculous with our money. My part of a $40 million per year budget required daily activity to be profitable. And, I was just a capable of doing the job being asked of my employees as they were. After all, who trained them in the job? I did. Did I ever hire a former government employee, no because they could not understand the need to be productive. My staff was close to 400 just for reference. Hope some liberals try to defend the need for this lunacy to continue.
