Calaveras Humane Society Asks Are You an Animal Crazy?
Calaveras County, CA ... Maybe you’re a cat or dog person, or a bird or horse person, or even an iguana or rat person. I think of myself as an “everything person.” This simply means that I love all animals (except spiders!). If you feel like I do, now is the perfect opportunity to get involved with the Calaveras Humane Society as a volunteer. At this time of year, the County Animal Shelter is full to overflowing with kittens and puppies as well as adult cat and dogs. They need your help desperately. Some of you may not be aware that the Calaveras Humane Society takes cats and kittens from the County Shelter and places them into foster care. Some are older cats who need socialization and some tiny babies even need bottle feeding. The Humane Society provides the food, litter and veterinary care so your cost is minimal. The only requirement is a love of all things feline and a little extra time and room in your life to do something worthwhile. Fostering the cats allows them to become more adoptable as they are then comfortable with human interaction and more loving to their owners...
I volunteer at the Arnold Thrift Store Cat Adoption Center. The work is actually joyful! I get to sit in a room full of foster kittens and cats and talk to people when they come in to just get their “cat fix.” Sometimes their cat fix turns into an adoption; sometimes even two get adopted. It’s a truly gratifying experience. And it’s a lot more fun to watch kittens playing than it is to watch the TV news. The Humane Society needs volunteers for the Adoption Center. It’s usually a four-hour shift and requires a short orientation/training. The County Shelter also needs volunteers for the cats that remain there. It’s “kitten season” and there are a lot of them just begging for attention. It’s actually calming to sit in a room with a cat and her kittens, just petting them and talking to them. Again, it makes them more adoptable by socializing them and there is no cost to you!
On to the dog people. The County Shelter is no longer thought of as the “County Pound.” A dog surrendered to the shelter is frequently an owner-surrender where the owner lost their home or simply doesn’t have the financial means to take care of a dog. This is actually the kindest thing to do as the folks at the shelter work really, really hard to find a new home for the dog. In the case of a lost dog, Animal Services and the Humane Society post flyers on their websites and on Facebook as well as network with any information available to find the owners.
These are not throwaway dogs. None of them are there through any fault of their own. But they need socializing, particularly after any period of confinement in the shelter. Calaveras Humane Society volunteers go to the shelter and walk the dogs, cuddle with the dogs and just get them used to human interaction. Again, the result is a more adoptable dog. As is the case with most shelters, there are more dogs than volunteers and we need your help. Just a few hours on any given day. The smiles and gratitude on the dogs’ faces will put a big smile on your face too!
Of course, it will not surprise you that this is also a plea for donations. The Calaveras Humane Society pays for all costs of the cat foster program, including spay and neuter, and all testing and vaccinations needed for the dogs. None of the members are paid, not even the Board members. It’s an all-volunteer, nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax deductible. Won’t you please help us help them?
