Verizon To Purchase Local Service Provider Golden State Cellular
Sonora, CA....Verizon Wireless is making a move to purchase Golden State Cellular. We have been following this story for the last several weeks but since the deal is subject to FCC approval we did not want to publish anything too soon and have it reflect negatively on one of our local employer's if the deal fell apart. The application has been on the FCC site for several weeks but fairly hard to find unless you knew what to dig for. Last night however Verizon Management was here locally and hosted a dinner. So if they are confident enough to talk with employees about the deal closing in the next few months then it looks like this sale will go through....
Verizon has long been a minority partner in Golden State Cellular and their taking a majority state could have positive consequences for our local communities.
Fist and foremost it should hasten the roll out of 4G LTE in the area. It will also hasten the availability of all the latest phones as soon as they are released nationally.
Golden State Cellular is a partnership that grew out of the local landline telephone companies. GSC has also been one our our area's largest employer's of high tech personal and their data and phone network allowed businesses like ThePineTree.net to grow and thrive.
One of the first purchases made for ThePineTree.net was a PCMCIA Data card for our Thinkpad Laptop. That combination especially back in 2006 allowed us to bring real time mobile news to the Mother Lode.
In our travels around the area we could predict within a few feet when we would have enough signal to post an update on a story. Standard practice in an unfamiliar area was to gain as much altitude as possible for line of site or as close as we could get it.
The laptop and data card have long since gown obsolete but they will always a special place in our memories. To the management and owners of Golden State Cellular we say thank you and we hope you are remunerated well for pioneering mobile technology in our area.
