President Obama's Weekly Address: Ensuring Equal Pay for Equal Work

Washington, DC....Hi, everybody. Earlier this week was Equal Pay Day. It marks the extra time the average woman has to work into a new year to earn what a man earned the year before. You see, the average woman who works full-time in America earns less than a man – even when she’s in the same profession and has the same education. That's wrong. In 2014, it’s an embarrassment. Women deserve equal pay for equal work.

This is an economic issue that affects all of us. Women make up about half our workforce. And more and more, they’re our families’ main breadwinners. So it’s good for everyone when women are paid fairly. That’s why, this week, I took action to prohibit more businesses from punishing workers who discuss their salaries – because more pay transparency makes it easier to spot pay discrimination. And I hope more business leaders will take up this cause.

But equal pay is just one part of an economic agenda for women.

Most lower-wage workers in America are women. So I’ve taken executive action to require federal contractors to pay their federally-funded employees at least ten dollars and ten cents an hour. I ordered a review of our nation’s overtime rules, to give more workers the chance to earn the overtime pay they deserve. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, tens of millions of women are now guaranteed free preventive care like mammograms and contraceptive care, and the days when you could be charged more just for being a woman are over for good. Across the country, we’re bringing Americans together to help us make sure that a woman can have a baby without sacrificing her job, or take a day off to care for a sick child or parent without hitting hardship. It’s time to do away with workplace policies that belong in a “Mad Men” episode, and give every woman the opportunity she deserves.

Here’s the problem, though. On issues that would benefit millions of women, Republicans in Congress have blocked progress at every turn. Just this week, Senate Republicans blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act, commonsense legislation that would help more women win equal pay for equal work. House Republicans won’t vote to raise the minimum wage or extend unemployment insurance for women out of work through no fault of their own. The budget they passed this week would force deep cuts to investments that overwhelmingly benefit women and children – like Medicaid, food stamps, and college grants. And of course, they’re trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act for the fiftieth or so time, which would take away vital benefits and protections from millions of women.

I’m going to keep fighting to make sure that doesn’t happen. Because we do better when our economy grows for everybody, not just a few. And when women succeed, America succeeds. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

Well, let's see. If the pass was opened, we would all have a scenic and shorter mileage route to NV. Nice enough. But if Republicans would stop blocking the proposed minimum wage increase, extension of unemployment benefits, and equal pay for equal work bills, then many of our fellow citizens would have a more secure life and more money to spend in our communities.

Our Representative McClintock is part of the problem. Since you won't be driving over the pass today, how about using the resulting free time to send him a letter or e-mail urging him to get with the program and offer some help to the citizens of his district.

CA minimum wage is currently $8.00, but is going to $9.00 on July 1, 2014. Pretty good but federal action would increase it to $10.10, which is better still. And we know that McDonalds and Walmart will not be outsourcing those jobs to China. There are, in fact, a lot of minimum wage jobs in our counties. An increase in minimum wage would stimulate the economy pretty well around here. Same thing with extended unemployment insurance. These things are certainly better for our economy than shutting down the federal government along with Yosemite last year, which, of course, McClintock did vote for. Time to get a representative who is on our side.

In the news is the old faithful Neo Cons being tapped for their wisdom- Cheney, Rumsfeld, even Bush.
How great will it be when the Neo Cons return, it worked out so well last time.
Oh, you've forgotten how it turned out.

No, he doesn't think he is special. He is tired of getting screwed by the Feds. They charge him a grazing fee and then expect him to build fences, irrigate and improve their land and then when he stops paying for land he is improving they throw a hissy fit. The bottom line is that the BLM wants his land so Harry Reid's Chinese investors can put in a solar farm. Really, do you really think the Feds care about some rancher running 900 head of cattle (maybe less not that the Feds have killed some of them) on some worthless piece of land in Nevada? On, they see how they can make more money. Get a grip people.

Horse apples. He had his day in court- at least a couple of times over decades, and he has refused to comply with his responsibilities . He is a leach for failing to pay his way like other responsible ranchers. He deserves to be jailed for contempt of lawful court orders. And please don't embarrass yourself by saying the court was not lawful. What do you suppose would happen to this great nation if everyone refused to follow our laws- laws put in place by our elected representatives, even presidents like Reagan- who signed the relevant grazing legislation.

Yes, ask yourself that! YOUR president refuses to follow the laws set forth by the Constitution. Laws put in place by our elected representatives. What do I suppose would happen to this (once) great nation? Well I can see how it has gone down the tubes thanks to this piece of crap you nimrods put in office.

This is the best that Barry can come up with week after week! The truth is that most foothill residents need clothes, food items, and household items, I think we could all agree on that. We all enjoy some kind of pleasure, eating out is fun, and the only pleasure that many families can afford! Movies, and a snack for each child are almost unaffordable, skiing is the same, other than taking a picnic somewhere, your affordable family fun is limited! I can' afford Kohl's but I can afford Wal-Mart, I can't afford the Diamondback, but I can afford fast food. Are the employees at Save Mart paid a lot more than those who work at Wal Mart, I don't know for fact that they are, but wouldn't it make sense that if SM paid better wages than Wal-Mart that you the employee would work yourself up, so when a Save Mart job opened up you could apply and maybe land a better job? This is true for any job, if job A doesn't pay enough you work till you have the skills to work at job B which pays more. I worked for minimum wages until I could land a better job, and could make more money, the minimum wage made me move on to something better!

I take your point, but the expectation is that if the minimum wage is increased, then those earning wages only slightly above minimum will see an increase too. That is, their employers will still pay a little more than minimum to d onto their better-than-minimum-wage employees. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that 28 million workers would see a wage increase because of this effect.

I'm happy that you had a chance to move up to a better job, but are you saying that being paid a higher minimum wage would not have been a great help to you? Really, if you have been there, I'd like to understand why you don't favor raising the minimum wage.

I believe a FT job needs to pay a living wage. It's simple, people with those jobs are counting on the wages to live.

Well, the German word is "Herr," not "Heir." Not that any part of your post makes sense. If you're going to make historical references, there is more credibility if you actually know something about history. Of course, if your intent is just to call Obama names, then all you need to do is work on your spelling. There are large print 3rd grade books that ought to cover all you need.

A living wage compared to the minimum wage are 2 different things! A living wage says you get paid whatever it takes to live where yo live, San Francisco, probably $ 50.00 an hr, Sonora, 15 to 20 dollars an hr, tho I' m guessing, you see that if you are the Giant Berger, 15 to 20 dollars an hr. would shut that place down unless we are willing tp pay 10 to 12 for a burger, minimum wage was established to set a bottom standard, and the hope was at 18 yrs. of age this would work, now we have 40 yr. olds trying to care for their family on this wage, they never moved up, for whatever reason! My answer is to vote for a candidate that believes in job expansion instead of job stagnation, then creates a situation where frustration keeps the voters sidetracked with minimum wage fighting! This man has never been fit to. Lead this country, 5 yrs. of causing unrest and contention has been his goal!

Conviction how some forget how the Republicans have blocked so many bills that would help employ more people.

The goal -job #1 was to cause so much suffering that people would vote Republican , make Obama a one term President. That has been the #1 job, impede , block, stall, anything to halt a full recovery from the 2008 crash caused by deregulation championed by the Republicans. How'd losing Glass Stegal work for the world's economies? Deregulation-the road to ruin, but a Republican mantra.

Who caused the unemployment in the first place?

2007-2008 the sh** hit the fan. Bush was warned by all 50 Governors in a letter warning of the sub prime crisis, he blew it off, just as he blew off the warnings Bin laden determined to use commercial aircraft to attack the US.

Amnesia, Denial Thy Name is Republican.

I did keep my doctor. I have a better policy, and pay $5.68 instead of $339 per month.
My partner of 12 years was denied by Blue Cross , COBRA her only option at $800/Mo.
          She now has Medi Cal.

The true death panels are the GOP Governors who refused Federal Medicare expansion.Already many cases are documented.
