We have a winner: 40th Annual Capitol Frog Jump Results

Sacramento, CA...Senator Tom Berryhill (R-Twain Harte) is pleased to announce the winners of the 40th annual Capitol Frog Jump. Elected officials, legislative staffers, media and members of the public jockeyed their frogs in hopes of winning the coveted trophies. There are three winning categories: longest, shortest and media jump. The only skill required of the frogs is the ability to leap far and wide. The jockeys are responsible for inspiring their frogs to move. Trophies and bragging rights were awarded to winners of the following categories...

Longest Jump goes to Assemblymember Cheryl Brown (D- San Bernardino) with her frog Larry B 2.0. Larry jumped a whopping 10’11 inches.

Shortest Jump is a tie between Caltrans and the Senate Republican Communications Shop. Both The Lean Green Caltrans Machine and High Speed Twain were on the slow train to nowhere today and only jumped 3’ 4.5 inches.

And finally, the Media Jump winner is Capitol Morning Report’s Jack Zwald. Jack’s frog, YOJO: You only jump once, flew to the finish with a 9’ 4.5” jump.

“This event is just good, old fashioned fun. When you are down on all fours, and your reputation depends upon a small green critter jumping, it is pretty humbling’” said Berryhill. “Lots of laughs and good spirited competition define the day that is for sure.”

Senator Berryhill represents Calaveras County in the state Senate. The Capitol Frog Jump is an unofficial kick off to the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The fair starts May 15 and runs through the 18th this year. For more information, visit www.frogtown.org.

“I admit, I am a little disappointed Watertight, Jr. didn’t come through for me this year,” Berryhill quipped. “You know what they say about kissing a frog….I just might have to try it next year because clearly my ‘man to frog’ pep talk didn’t do a bit of good.”

Senator Berryhill’s frog, “Watertight, Jr.” jumped a disappointing 5’ 1” inches. By comparison, the current world record, held by Laura Kitchell of Angels Camp is 19 feet, 5.5 inches.

Started in 1928, the frog jump was inspired by Mark Twain's fictional work, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” The Calaveras County Fair adopted the Jumping Frog as their theme 10 years later. The public can watch the official Calaveras County Frog Jump at the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angels Camp, which runs May 15-18th. For more information, visit www.frogtown.org
