The Tuolumne Calaveras Unit Kicks Off The 2014 Fire Season Today

San Andreas, CA....As of today, May 12th, The Tuolumne Calaveras Unit or TCU is ready to roll. The Columbia Air Attack Base is fully staffed with Helicopter 404 and the contract on Air Tankers typically 81 & 82 starts today. The actual pieces of equipment can change but our area typically will have one helicopter and two tankers assigned for the duration of the season. The stations are fully staffed and the 2014 Fire Season is officially underway. It marks an early start and with the extremely dry conditions it would behoove all of us to be extra, extra, extra careful this year. Just think, last year all it took was one escaped campfire in August and now from Sonora to Yosemite is several shades darker and without trees that will take decades if ever to return to their previous state....

The shot above was taken a couple of weeks ago of the training excersises at Frog Town where some of the latest Cal-Fire Team members were put through their paces.

So ready or not (And most of us still haven't gotten over last fire season) the 2014 Fire Season is underway!!

Typically what you will see during the first few weeks is grass fires on the western edge and lower elevations of the county as the grass loses it's spring moisture content.

Some of these can grow almost exponentially in size very quickly. Luckily unless they encroach on a structure the damage is minimal. For example some of these can grow to a couple hundred of acres in less than an hour.

In some ways these can be helpful for the crews as it gets everyone functioning as a well oiled team before we typically see fires where there are heavier fuel loads and more potential for long term damage.

As usual we will try our best to keep you up to speed on the fire activity in the area. If you see something we missed or have a photo you would like to pass along just send it to news@thepinetree.net

As always we thank you for your visits and support.
