Letter to the Editor Concerning World Population Day,
World Population Day, observed annually on July 11, was created by the United Nations in recognition of the need to raise awareness about the problems created by growing human populations. Not long ago, on July 11, 1987, the world's population reached Five Billion people. Today there are more than Seven Billion people and we are adding 227,000 more each day. Common sense tells us that this cannot go on forever. We are already running out of space, food, and clean water in many places the world. Indeed, climate change, and the concurrent crisis- species extinction - are the result of too many people living in disregard of earth's limits. The toll of wildlife has been devastating: species are going extinct at a rate 1,000 times greater than what is normal. 25% of ALL species are now endanger of extinction. The number one cause is habitat destruction by people. This impending huge loss of biodiversity will cost us much more than our most cherished creatures- orangutans, rhinos, elephants, tigers, pandas, etc. It will imperil the stability of the web-of-life on which we all depend....
But what can we do? I urge everyone to adopt a life-style that includes three things: 1) learn, 2) share, 3) act. We must all become activists by learning more about these problems and their solutions, sharing what we learn with others, and acting in a responsible way. You can start by joining a wildife group. There are lots of nonprofits that need your help.
