Internationally-Acclaimed Jazz Harpist Comes To Moke Hill!

Mokelumne Hill, CA...Feeling a little overwhelmed lately? Need some inspiration? The easy anecdote: Motoshi Kosako, renowned Jazz harpist, returns to Petroglyphe Gallery performing a solo concert from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. This is the final concert in the 2014 Sunday Fine Art Concert Series and definitely one not to be missed....

Back by popular demand, Motoshi’s music transforms the audience into other worlds – into a softer, gentler, more peaceful place. This concert gives the audience the rare opportunity to have personal interaction with this amazing musician.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. for light appetizers and Hovey wine in the gallery, followed by an intimate concert in the adjacent Quarry Hill Studio at 4 p.m. Concert tickets are $21 in advance and $23 the day of the event (if available). Seating is limited to 50, and because of his popularity it is highly suggested tickets be reserved in advance to guarantee a seat at the concert.

For concert tickets visit www.gallerypetroglyphe.com/music-concert-series or call the gallery at 286-1387. Serenity calls!

About Motoshi Kosako

Born in Matsuyama City, Japan, Kosako started playing piano at the age of 3 and honed his skills for nine years before taking up jazz guitar and playing professionally for 15 years. Swing Journal magazine described him as “one of the most remarkable young Jazz musicians.”

In 1997 he moved to the United States and shortly thereafter picked up the harp. With his background in Jazz and Blues, he soon found a way to incorporate Jazz movements “bringing new life into the music scene and rediscovering the beauty of this neglected instrument,” he shared. “I reclaim the hidden possibilities of the harp through my original compositions with various styles and improvisation.”

Kosako was the principal harpist of Stockton Symphony Orchestra and was its featured soloist for the 2009-2010 Season. In 2007 he won second place in the Lyon & Healy International Jazz and Pop Harp Competition and received the “Best of Sacramento” award as Sacramento Magazine’s “Best Jazz Hound in Tie and Tail.” Sacramento magazine wrote, “Kosako plays with fluid, modern style that evokes Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea.” He is considered the most influential Jazz harpist in Japan.

In 2002 and 2003, Kosako recorded two classical harp albums, Celestial Harp I and II, and in 2008 released his first Jazz album, Naked Wonder, with his trio, Bill Douglass and Daryl Van Druff. In 2010 he released his solo album “Living Harp” in Japan and produced a new album, “Place in the Heart” with Grammy award-winning musician, Paul McCandless.

Kosako plays numerous original compositions and standards. “People are quite surprised when they hear me play,” he noted. “The response is very positive. For me it’s very challenging technically and extremely rewarding. I’ve had no one to follow; I just keep improvising and creating new compositions.” He has composed custom pieces for television programs and documentaries, and teaches workshops and seminars. He recently performed at the World Harp Congress in Sydney, Australia.
