A cleaner Mokelumne thanks to local volunteers
The Mokelumne River is cleaner thanks to the efforts of volunteers at Foothill Conservancy’s annual Mokelumne River Cleanup. Along 3.5 river miles, volunteers collected more than 300 pounds of trash and recyclables at sites on Electra Road, Big Bar, and upcountry at the North Fork crossing at Highway 26....
“Thanks to the hard work of these volunteers, hundreds of pounds of trash will be kept out of the river,” said cleanup coordinator Carolyn Schooley. “Keeping the Mokelumne’s water clean and the river beautiful for our communities and visitors is something we can all do every day by remembering to dispose of our trash properly.”
Almost one third of the trash collected was recyclable bottles and cans. The most unusual find? A whole coconut, black and white sesame seeds and other seeds wrapped up on a cloth.
The Mokelumne River Cleanup was part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup, sponsored statewide by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and a number of businesses and organizations. Foothill Conservancy would like to thank ACES Waste Services, Argonaut High School’s home economics class, New York Fitness, Martell Safeway, Munnerlyn’s Ice Cream, Pine Grove Market, and Pine Grove Stars Donuts for their local support of this year’s cleanup.
