COUNTING THE DAYS AND HOURS Daylight Saving Time in California ~ By Bob Mulvany

Calaveras County, CA...We will “fall back” from daylight saving time on November 2. Whew! That is only 49 days before the Winter Solstice. Then on the second Sunday of March 2015 we “spring forward” again. This happens in most states with Arizona being one of the few exceptions. Daylight Saving Time is not entirely popular and there are some drawbacks. For example, it has been found that accidents of all types increase on days following the time change in March. This probably results from sleep deprivation.

The reason for daylight saving time is to make more daylight available when the days are longer. President Roosevelt called it “War Time” during WWII. How appropriate.

Daylight saving time has been a contentious issue across the country since it was first conceived over a century ago. In the 1930’s when it came to a vote in California, a short film shown before the main features at the movies depicted a farmer getting up an hour early to milk his cow. The cow kicked the milk pail out the barn door and hung up a sign that read, “Come back at the regular time.” The daylight saving measure passed in spite of the dairy cows.

This year we "sprang forward" on March 9, 78 days after the 2013 Winter solstice and will fall back on November 9, 49 days before the 2014 Winter solstice. This amounts to about eight months on daylight saving and four months on standard time. What is the benefit? Have the best dates been chosen for the time changes? Is there a better way to get us up early? Is daylight time really saved? Is it worth the trouble? Will we ever know?

Any wise thoughts out there?
