The Face of Cancer Rebuilds Confidence in Cancer Survivors at the Susan G. Komen Race for Cure....Team of 100 set out to reunite cancer patients with their sense of beauty
The Face of Cancer, a non-profit, program dedicated to making female cancer patients feel beautiful and feminine, hosted its “Spoil a Survivor” tailgate at the Central Valley’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 25, 2014. Women currently battling breast cancer and those who have survived the disease were invited to receive full makeovers from the The Face of Cancer. Professional makeup artist and esthetician Saroya Melfe and Aloette representative Kathy Cummings volunteered their time during the event....
Melfe heard about The Face of Cancer through her close friend Bren Flowers, the inaugural recipient of the non-profit’s “Fantasy Themed Photo Shoot” who lost her battle with breast cancer in May. The Face of Cancer booth was dedicated to Flowers and a video taken during her photo shoot was shown before the team walked the survivor lap in her memory.
“This is not about putting makeup on people, it’s about loving people,” Melfe said.
Terminal cancer patient Edna Gutierrez, who visited the “Spoil a Survivor” booth Saturday morning, said she, like many female cancer patients, felt like her femininity had been taken away overnight.
“One day I was fine and then the next I found out I had breast cancer,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez mentions that her hardest loss was her long black hair, lost during her treatment.
The Face of Cancer may never help her retain her natural hair back, but the services and resources The Face of Cancer provides are a blessing to her and other women, by restoring a sense of beauty which can evoke confidence and femininity that is often lost while battling cancer.
“This makes me feel better,” Gutierrez said.
The Face of Cancer is currently looking for nominations from the community for women who may be good candidates to be featured as the next “Face of Cancer.” A fundraiser will be held in January to raise money for the “Face of Cancer Fantasy Photoshoots.” For more information, or to nominate someone in the community to be featured, please visit www.faceofcancer.org
About The Face of Cancer
The Face of Cancer is a non- profit, non-medical public service program that helps to provide female cancer patients the support and help in addressing a particularly devastating part of their cancer battle, their physical appearance.
Founded by cancer survivor Holly Carter, owner of Fresno based Carter & Co. Communications, The Face of Cancer seeks to build a network of local firms who will provide services related to making cancer patients feel better about their appearance and help to restore their feeling of femininity and beauty. In addition, The Face of Cancer seeks to link women to resources available that enhance their appearance as they go through the cancer battle.
