Thanksgiving Tribute at Deborah Marlene's!

Calaveras County, CA...November is the month of Thanksgiving, the time to give thanks for those protecting us and our freedom, for family, friends and the many blessings we have, living here, in the United States. This month Deborah Marlene's will host a Tribute Exhibit of the Art of Carol Fields, a long time Artist and County Resident, who passed away this last September 26th....

Many of you here in Calaveras County may have known Carol and Ron Fields. They owned and operated the Rail Road Flat General Store from 1970 to 1975. Carol loved the Northern area of the county, and knew Calaveras County well, since she later worked in Real Estate. She once remarked that she thought the Rail Road Flat and Glenco area was the most scenic area of the County. She told of her daughter Rae, horse riding with friends, all the way from their home in Rail Road Flat to the Blue Mountain area; such were the earlier days in this County.

Later, in 1990, Carol, who was a gifted floral designer, opened Duffys flower shop, in Murphys. " Flowers are what originally brought Carol into my life, when I worked for the McFalls at Blooms and Things in Arnold, says Deborah." Her daughter Rae Davis, another talented floral designer, worked there, too. Rae often talked of her Mom, as an Artist , as well as how she had learned so much about arranging flowers from her.

Upon returning to Calaveras County in 2012, I was briefly reacquainted with Carol, when I wandered into her Art Gallery, Field's Designs, on Main Street in Murphys. When a job opportunity for painting in acrylics came up; Deborah remembered Carol's skills and asked if she could study acrylic painting with her. "We met weekly at Carol's home for about 6 months as she mentored me; on using acrylic paints, focusing on portraits. Over her painting career, Carol painted on deer hides and figured she had painted nearly every Native American Chief's picture that she could find. It was encouraging for us both to paint together and visit. I will forever remember her insight and the instruction she so readily shared, as well as the friendship we developed."

In 2013, Carol entered the Professional Art competition at the Calaveras County Fair and took a First Award for her depiction of a Veteran who was out of work. She had a great compassion for Veterans re-entering society.

Carol once told me that one of her Art Instructors deemed her work as Contemporary Art. " She had her own vibrant style and liked to make a statement, to her viewers with each of her pieces.", says Deborah.
I am honored to feature Carol's Art; which will include some works from her family's collection. Carol Fields, was also an Author, writing and illustrating the book Willie Wigglesworth...Be Careful what you Wish For. The limited supply of these books will be available for purchase, during this show.

Life is not easy for any of us. Especially, when health issues arise. A saving grace of being an Artist, is getting so into the "zone" that we forget our pains, if only for a bit. Carol left us after a long battle with Cancer. The times painting and exhibiting with her at the Fair were special, and I am thankful, for the memories I have of her.

Hours for Carol Field's Tribute Exhibition at Deborah Marlene's are: Thursday through Monday10AM to 4PM.
