Health Department Measles Update

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County Health Services is continuing to monitor a significant measles outbreak occurring throughout California and several neighboring states. Many of those confirmed to have measles have been linked to visiting Disneyland or Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim during late December and early January. To date no Calaveras County residents have been reported to have confirmed or suspected measles infection. “Measles is a highly infectious, airborne disease that typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, and within a few days a red rash appears, usually first on the face and then spreading downward to the rest of the body” said Dean Kelaita, MD, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent measles.”...

An analysis of the measles cases in this outbreak shows that failure to be vaccinated against the disease is the main risk factor in those acquiring the illness. Two doses of measles – containing vaccine (Measles Mumps & Rubella “MMR” Vaccine) are more than 99 percent effective in preventing measles. Measles vaccines have been available in the United States since 1963, and two doses have been recommended since 1989. Those born prior to 1957 are considered immune and do not need vaccination. “If you are unsure of your, or your children’s, vaccination status, check with your health care provider” stressed Dr. Kelaita. A blood test can detect measles immunity, or a person should receive vaccination if adequate protection against the disease is in doubt.

Measles can cause severe health complications including pneumonia, infection of the brain and nervous system, and even death. Children who have not received two doses of MMR vaccine may be excluded from school in the event of local disease occurrence. “It is important for health care providers and the public to be aware that measles transmission can occur in Calaveras County, and they can prevent transmission by receiving two doses of MMR vaccine” said Dr. Kelaita.

For more information on measles or on getting the MMR vaccine, contact Calaveras County Health Services at (209) 754-6460 or visit the website www.CalaverasPublicHealth.com
