Can You Keep a Secret?

Murphys, CA....Murphys Creek Theatre is hoping you can keep the secrets of the comedy-thriller, Accomplice, opening March 27, under your hat. And you’ll need a very, very big hat. “Accomplice” has more twists than a head full of dreadlocks. Prepare to be deceived, dazzled, delighted – and then be sworn to silence. Seeing the play is like watching a great magician at work, you know that what just happened is impossible, yet you have just seen it with your own eyes. Like a great magician, Murphys Creek can’t reveal the exact details of the trickery .....

and will ask its audiences to do the same. In fact much of the success of the play is due to the fact that many audience members return, this time bringing friends, just to see the stunned look on their faces.

This much can be said, critics have called “Accomplice” “The best thriller since ‘Sleuth’ and twice as clever.”, “The wittiest and most accomplished fooler since ‘Deathtrap’” and “The standard by which the genre should be set.”

Three time Tony Award winner, playwright Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Nutty Professor) received the coveted Edgar Award for Best Mystery for Accomplice. He contrived this four person thriller with just the right amount of plot twists so when you think you’ve got it…the rug is pulled out from beneath you again and again. It'll keep you guessing right up until the final curtain. Director, Maryann Curmi calls Accomplice an exquisite concoction of comedy, thriller, murder mystery and sex farce.

She has gathered a cast that is certainly up for the mayhem that’ll hit Murphys Theatre at the Playhouse in Murphys on March 27th. This cast includes Don Bilotti…Maryann says ’with over 35 years of stage experience under his belt, Don amazes me time and time again. The best acting guns I’ve ever seen fired onstage. He is an absolute genius’! Don was last seen in ‘I Hate Hamlet’ also for MCT. Other credits include featured roles in; Sherlock Holmes, The Taming of The Shrew, The Sunshine Boys among many others.

Joe Conn joins MCT for the first time but he is no newcomer to the stage. ‘Joe’s portrayal of Lee recently in Sam Shepard’s True West (Center Stage Theatre, Modesto) was spellbinding’ says Maryann. She also notes that after casting Joe as Stanley in Streetcar Named Desire, she trusts him implicitly.

Michelle Low was seen last season here at MCT in I Hate Hamlet and hot off the heels of her recent appearance as Trish in Alan Ball's; 5 Women Wearing the Same Dress. Theatre goers from across the river (Sonora) will surely remember Michelle’s work as Cory in Barefoot in The Park, The Foreigner and Noise’s Off.

Besides directing MCT's first show of the season, Maryann is also stepping onto the stage, as she reprises the role she played in 'Accomplice' some ten years ago! ‘This is the first time I’ve recreated a role and discovering new things along the way is making it worth every minute. I had a blast the first time around with ‘Accomplice’ and I think my favorite thing to hear (besides the audible gasps from the audience) was them telling me they’re planning on seeing it a second time & bringing friends, because they wanted to see the looks on their friends’ faces when the secrets started spilling on to the stage!’.

‘I’ll admit…acting and directing Accomplice can be a bit tricky, but I’ve always said… if it’s not a challenge then it’s not worth it. And when you’ve got talent like this on stage, plus a great Stage Manager like Cortney Gillaspie and Nathen Neill as a Technical Director who thinks outside the box, it’s much easier than it sounds.’

Accomplice plays Friday and Saturday nights at 7pm, and Sundays at 2pm. Book tickets online at www.murphyscreektheatre.org or by calling 209-728-8422. Ticket prices $20 adults, $18 seniors/students.

Murphys Creek Theatre is located at 580 S. Algiers Street, Murphys, CA
