Reforestation Takes Front Row in Upcoming Forest Service Meetings

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest is seeking public engagement on reforestation of the Forest area affected by the Rim Fire of 2013, a fire that burned 257,314 acres of land, by hosting a workshop and open houses next week. The Reforestation Project proposed action is available for public input/official comment until April 13; reforestation can begin once the Environmental Impact Statement is complete and the Record of Decision is signed (June 2016 estimated completion)....

With the goal of soliciting input and feedback on the Reforestation Project, the Forest encourages the public to attend the planned workshop and/or open houses. The workshop will be a highly technical, working meeting, while the open houses will address general questions and concerns, featuring resource stations staffed with specialists.

The Reforestation Workshop and Open Houses will have members of the Forest Interdisciplinary Team that developed the proposed action available to answer questions/concerns and receive feedback on the proposed action.

Location information is as follows:
 Reforestation Technical Workshop – April 8 from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Tuolumne County Emergency Operations Center, 18440 Striker Ct., (off of Tuolumne Rd), Sonora, CA.
 Reforestation Open House – April 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Tuolumne County Emergency Operations Center, 18440 Striker Ct., (off of Tuolumne Rd), Sonora, CA.
 Reforestation Open House – April 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Tuolumne County Emergency Operations Center, 18440 Striker Ct., (off of Tuolumne Rd), Sonora, CA.

Nearly 155,000 of the acres burned in the Rim Fire occurred on the Forest with roughly 98,049 acres burning under moderate to high-severity conditions. With the help of an engaged community, an Environmental Assessment on Hazard Tree removal and an Environmental Impact Statement on salvage recovery were accomplished in record time allowing for some of the first steps of recovery – removal of some of the hazards that kept the forest closure in place, restricting public access.

In order for us to better accommodate your needs, PLEASE RSVP stating which meeting(s) you will be attending. For questions, concerns or if you have special needs related to involvement in these meetings, please contact Georgia Dempsey, Rim Fire Public Affairs Officer at: gdempsey@fs.fed.us or (209) 532-3671 extension 259.
