Mother Lode Storytelling Guild To Meet In Angels Camp

Angels Camp, CA...This Saturday the Mother Lode Storytelling Guild gathers for its final meeting of the 2014-2015 season. Tellers and story listeners will come together to share stories of “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,” from 4pm to 6pm at a private residence in Angels Camp. Those interested in attending can contact the Guild for address and directions by email or phone: motherlodestorytellers@gmail.com or (209)532-7697...

“Our Guild works to strengthen tellers in our region,” says MLSG president B.Z. Smith. “We serve Calaveras, Amador and Tuolumne Counties, so periodically we move the meetings from one county to another.” Anyone who wants to tell can prepare a 5 to 7 minute story. “We offer a theme just for the challenge, but tellers do not have to choose a story on this theme,” Smith adds. She noted that an example of a story on this theme could be a tale of the American West or it could be a story like Cinderella. “If you think it fits the theme, then it does! We encourage broad interpretations.”

Since its inception in 2010, the Mother Lode Storytelling Guild has hosted meetings from September through April. “We take the late Spring and Summer off to allow us to enjoy the many storytelling festivals and conferences that take place in those months,” explains member and performance teller Cynthia Restivo. In mid-October the group is planning its second Story Slam Concert and Contest. “We held our premiere Slam in Murphys last October during the Sierra Story Winds Retreat,” Guild vice president Colleen Dolan offers. “It was just a huge success with over 80 people attending to great fantastic tellers! We are definitely doing that event again.”

The Mother Lode Storytelling Guild is affiliated with the National Storytelling Network, a nonprofit organization that offers grants and fellowships to storytellers and community organizations. This Summer NSN will host “Pathways,” the 2015 annual Summer Conference from July 30th to August 2nd, 2015, in Kansas City, MO. Some of the local Guild members plan to attend. “We're really proud because B.Z. Smith will be giving a workshop at the Summer Conference,” says Guild treasurer Charley Marangio. The workshop is entitled, “Community Crossroads: Where Storytelling Audiences, Advocates and Sponsors Meet.” Smith will team with San Diego-based storyteller Marilyn McPhie for the presentation.

For more information on Mother Lode Storytelling Guild and the National Storytelling Network, please call B.Z. Smith at (209)532-7697 or email motherlodestorytellers@gmail.com.
