Beth Childs/Genna Hurst Scholarship Awarded by Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF)

West Point, CA...The Beth E. Childs/ Genna Hurst Renewable Scholarship administered by the Calaveras Community Foundation was presented during the Awards night at Calaveras High School in early June. The 2015 scholarship committee chose, for the first time ever, to award two scholarships. Timothy Hood and Kenneth Wright were virtually tied based on the committee’s criteria.

Timothy (TJ) is the son of proud parents, Katherine and Dennis Hood of West Point. TJ will be attending University of Nevada-Reno and following a field of study in Microbiology and Biochemistry. His ultimate engineering degree will advance biological and medical science through medications, agricultural development and prosthetics.

TJ has taken several AP classes while at CHHS as well as being active in band where he plays clarinet and saxophone. Soccer has taught TJ the importance of teamwork. Eight years as a 4-H member reinforced the criticality of community service. Since July 2014, TJ has worked as a fishery technician at Kemoo LLC. Timothy states: "Thank you for selecting me for the Beth Childs/ Genna Hurst Scholarship. The generosity of such a small community amazes me, and it's great to see how much support Calaveras County invests in it's graduating classes. This scholarship is unique in that it will help lift the burden of tuition all four years of my education, and I am very grateful for that gift."

Kenneth (Kenny) Wood, son or Darla and Ken Wright, also of West Point, is CCF’s second scholarship recipient. Most of Kenny’s life he has heard these words: “Strive to be the best!” With that in mind, Kenny is bound for Sacramento State to pursue a degree in Nursing with the possibility of ultimately becoming a medical doctor. Courses like Anatomy and Physiology and CTE Medical Science filled his junior and senior years at CHHS. For the past 3 years, Kenny has been employed with Foster Construction. As if that is not enough, he has volunteered at Mark Twain Hospital and as well as serving as a Science Camp Counselor. He states: “I am honored to be chosen as one of the recipients of the Beth Childs/Genna Hurst scholarship. This scholarship will help me a great deal knowing that I will have money to pay for my books and even a portion of my tuition every semester.”

These scholarships are 4-year $4,000 renewable scholarships and awarded annually to a graduating student residing in the West Point/ Wilseyville area.
