Minor Injuries In 13 Corners Area Morning Collision That Closed Hwy 49 & Snarled Traffic
Mokelumne Hill, CA...CHP has released additional details on the morning collision north of Mokelumne Hill that closed Hwy 49 for an hour and caused extended traffic issues until early afternoon. The collision was between a big rig carrying a load of asphalt and a Toyota. When the big rig overturned it dumped 12 tons of asphalt in the roadway. There were minor injuries to men from Sacramento and Sutter Creek. Additional details are below...
ON 10/20/2016, AT APPROXIMATELY 0908 HOURS, PARTY #1 (P-1)(SULLIVAN) WAS DRIVING VEHICLE #1 (PETERBILT) NORTHBOUND ON SR-49 AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MILES PER HOUR, IN A SWEEPING LEFT CURVE IN THE ROADWAY. PARTY #2 (P-2)(TEVES) WAS DRIVING VEHICLE #2 (TOYOTA) SOUTHBOUND ON SR-49 AT APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES PER HOUR APPROACHING P-2. P-1 ALLOWED V-1 TO TRAVEL INTO THE SOUTHBOUND LANE. P-2 OBSERVED V-1 TRAVEL INTO HIS PATH, BUT DID NOT HAVE TIME TO AVOID A COLLISION. THE LEFT FRONT OF V-1 COLLIDED WITH THE LEFT FRONT OF V-2. P-1 OBSERVED OTHER VEHICLES APPROACHING SOUTHBOUND AND P-1 TURNED V-1 TO THE RIGHT. V-1 TRAVELED UP THE ROCK EMBANKMENT CAUSING V-1'S REAR TRAILER TO OVERTURN, SPILLING A LOAD OF ASPHALT ACROSS THE TRAFFIC LANES.
ALCOHOL IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE A FACTOR IN THIS COLLISION.
THE ROADWAY WAS BLOCKED COMPLETELY FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR AND THEN ONE-WAY TRAFFIC CONTROL WAS USED UNTIL 1:00PM.
