"We're Starting New, You Can Too!"...Calaveras County Library Migrating to New Automated Circulation System
“We’re starting New, You can too” is the Calaveras County Library System theme as the library’s automated circulation system is upgraded on January 25, 2008. Library Director Maurie Hoekstra says the current system is now over 12 years old and lacks the functionality available with new systems today. It has reached “end of life” and is being phased out by the vendor....
The Library system anticipates some interruptions and delays in service during January as the new system is being implemented. During the week of January 22 the data from the old system will be migrated over to the new system. Renewals, holds, and book searches will not be possible during that time.
Interlibrary loan service may be delayed for a few weeks. Avid readers are advised to stock up since the branch libraries will be closed the week of January 22 – 26 while the System is being implemented. Customers checking out items during the month of January will receive extended loan periods to compensate for the closure. The Central Library in San Andreas will be open with limited service.
The new system will provide many benefits to our library customers. There will be a 2-day grace period for late items. This grace period should help library customers who are conscientious about returning items but sometimes miss the due date by a day or two.
Library customers can receive an email Advance Notification of items coming due. An email reminder will be sent to users 2 days before an item comes dues. To take advantage of this feature library customers should make sure their email address is on file and correct. This feature should be helpful in reminding customers to return or renew items in a timely manner thus avoiding fines.
Library customers accessing the online catalog from home at www.calaveraslibrary.com will be able to see lists of new books and DVD’s added to the collection. In addition they can view bestseller lists, lists of award winning books and lists of popular titles in the Calaveras County Library collection.
Effective January 25 video fines will change to 20 cents a day and have a 3-week checkout. The video collection is starting to age and it seemed excessively punitive to charge a dollar a day for fines on these old items. The DVD collection is still quite small and new so fines will remain at $1.00 a day with a one-week checkout.
Behind the scenes, the new system provides for detailed reporting of types of materials customers check out, items needing additional copies, etc. This dynamic capability should greatly enhance the level of service we can offer to library customers.
Effective January 25, 2008 library customers must have their fines below a $5.00 threshold to check out materials. By lowering this threshold the Library System hopes to make it easier for customers to manage their accounts. Some customers feel overwhelmed and embarrassed by their fines and this should help customers avoid those situations by not allowing the charges to get too high in the first place.
Customers can take advantage of a Fine Amnesty to bring their fine records under the threshold. Items returned during January 22 to February 5 will not be assessed fines.
To help customers become more acquainted with using the catalog, there will be orientations at the Library in San Andreas or they can seek assistance from the staff at their branch library.
