Commission On Aging Invites You...

Valley Springs, CA...The Calaveras County Commission on Aging will meet Friday, April 7, 2017 at 10am at Round Table Pizza, 87 Hwy 26, next to Mar Val, in Valley Springs, as it continues to educate seniors on its purpose and scope, all over the county. The COA is tasked with helping the county provide an environment conducive to the well-being of older adults and interested seniors for Commission vacancies and interested seniors are invited to attend.

Projects for the year are varied and far-reaching to assist and recognize as many county seniors, as possible. The Senior Scope is an important one, which is a hand out containing contact information for all assistance a senior might need or want. The distribution of the Vial of Life remains on the list of priorities. This Vial, attaches to the refrigerator, and contains vital information for anyone providing immediate emergency assistance. The Veterans of Foreign Wars provided funding for this project. Recognition of the Volunteer Senior of the Year is important, as community involvement, is vital to the socialization of many in the county. Legislation, which affects the senior population, is followed by a committee headed by the Chair Rex Whisnand who, also, sits on Area 12 for Aging.

New ideas are always welcome and visiting guests just might and could bring some to the group. The population for seniors in Calaveras County is approximately 35 to 45%, which grows steadily and, does impact the decisions made, for the age group, by the Board of Supervisors and county department heads, where needed.

The Commission on Aging is made up of three commissioners representing all five districts. Officers elected for 2017 are Chair Rex Whisnand, who can be reached on 785-8166 for any questions on vacancies or the group, itself. Vice Chair is Bertha Underhill and Secretary is Elizabeth Thompson.
