Suspect Arrested for Attempted Auto Burglary and Vandalism

Angels Camp, CA...On 04/02/17, at approximately 4:30 PM, officers from the Angels Camp PD were dispatched to the area of the Calaveras Lumber parking lot on a report of a subject that attempted to break into a vehicle that was parked in the parking lot. Two witnesses, one of which was the owner of the vehicle that was vandalized, advised that the suspect was holding some type of tool that he used in several unsuccessful attempts to break the glass on the vehicle. The witnesses advised that they last saw the suspect crossing SR 49 on foot, walking toward a nearby residence.

Officers responding to the area checked a residence in the 100 block of Peri Street, where they located several subjects. One of the people they encountered was positively identified by the witnesses as the suspect that attempted to break the glass on the vehicle.

Jonathan Vasquez, an 18 year old San Jose, CA resident, was arrested on charges related to attempted auto burglary and vandalism. The vehicle owner confirmed that during Vasquez's attempts at breaking two different windows on the vehicle, the tool he was using left several deep chips in the glass, damaging the windows. During an interview subsequent to his arrest, Vasquez admitted that he was "showing off" for some of his friends by attempting to break into the vehicle. Vasquez did not provide any other explanation for his actions. No tool or device that was reported as being used by Vasquez was recovered. A records check on Vasquez also revealed that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest, issued by the Santa Clara County Superior Court, which was confirmed and served.

Vasquez has been staying in Angels Camp, and working for a tree service company that is involved in the local tree mortality project.
