Mark Twain St. Josephs Hospital Awards Community Grant To Fight Childhood Obesity Today
San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital today awarded an $18,475 Catholic Healthcare West Community Grant to the Take It To Heart Foundation, a local not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote a heart-healthy lifestyle in the Mother Lode. The award will be used to implement their ‘Family Fit’ project in all Calaveras and Tuolumne County elementary schools. The ‘Family Fit’ project helps families establish healthier eating habits, live a more active lifestyle, increase fitness and self-esteem, and have fun together. ....

Lisa Westbrook, Take It To Heart Foundation President, accepted the grant award. “Nutritional habits, physical activities and education are keys to the success of this project. Initial studies showed that almost one fifth of our 4th and 5th grade students were at-risk for health problems because of their weight” said Ms. Westbrook. “Our ‘Family Fit’ pilot program has shown positive changes in the Body Mass Index for the students and perhaps their families as well”. The program has been introduced in all Tuolumne county elementary schools and three Calaveras county schools this year.
Larry Cornish, Community Grant Coordinator for Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital made the presentation. “Childhood obesity often leads to a lifetime of health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. This grant funding will allow ‘Family Fit’ to positively impact Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties”.

Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a not-for-profit, 48-bed general acute care hospital serving all of Calaveras County. Established in 1951 as Mark Twain District Hospital and centrally located in San Andreas, the hospital is partnered with Catholic Healthcare West to further strengthen this rural hospital to meet future community needs.
