"Vernal Falls"~By K. Arijel

"One late winter day she was stuck in morning traffic on Highway 101 near San Jose. As she sat waiting for traffic to move, she happened to look over her shoulder and saw the sun rise above the foothills of the east bay. Out of the blue, she found herself day dreaming about Yosemite, and impulsively she took the first exit off Highway 101 and headed east....

She drove across our state, reaching a near abandoned Yosemite well before noon, and she parked her car near the trail head that leads to Vernal Falls. She began walking up the trail, and while walking, she thought of a dear friend who had once told her about how fun it is to be very quite while walking in nature. She decided to give her friend’s fun a try and committed herself to moving unheard as she walked to see Vernal Falls.

She was very quite as she walked, and she began to notice her hearing, touch, and sight becoming clearer. To her surprise, she felt herself becoming an extension of the land rather than simply a person walking up a trail, and with this her sense of time ceased to be. The trail drew near a mountain river, and as she looked at the swift flowing river, she spotted a school of fish swimming upstream. Her eye followed the family up the river, and then she saw Vernal Falls. Looking upon the Falls, she forgot her fun, and without thought she inhaled deeply.

And she began to sing."
