New San Andreas School Site to Open Doors Next Fall ~ By Bethany Monk
San Andreas, C.A….Students at Mountain Ranch Community Day School in Mountain Ranch and Mountain Oaks Charter School in San Andreas will soon have a new state-of–the-art campus to call their own…
Tim Randolph of BoBo Construction oversees about 40 sub-
contractors on the new school site project in San Andreas.
Construction of the 30,000-square-foot facility, on Pool Station in Road in San Andreas, is well underway and is set for completion before next fall.
In March of 2006, the State Allocation Board approved $15,144,00 for the Calaveras County Office of Education’s construction of the new school site. In April, the County Office of Education went “out to bid” and eventually hired Facility Management Group out of Sacramento to oversee the project. BoBo Construction, out of Elk Grove, and several subcontractors have been working on the site since May 30.
“We’re moving forward,” said Patrick Van Lieshout of Facility Management Group. Van Lieshout, who is the site superintendent for the new school construction, presented an update on site’s progress to the County Office of Education Board members during the board’s monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 22.
“We’re pretty weathered in,” he continued, noting the county’s heavy rainfall this month. The site is about 65 percent complete; most of the roofing is finished and building paper on the outside of the facility helps repel water.
“I think they’re taking as a challenge to get done,” Van Lieshout said later in an interview highlighting BoBo Construction’s “rain or shine” work ethic. “I have all the confidence they will,” he said after praising their work thus far.
The site is innovative in that two schools – Mountain Ranch Community School, an alternative school serving students in sixth through 12th grades, and Mountain Oaks School, a kindergarten through 12th grade home-based charter school – will share the new school site. In essence, the new schools will be located next to each other, separated by a gym and lunchroom.
The school site will provide more room for students and staff and will have the latest computer technologies, a lunchroom, an outside amphitheater, an indoor theatrical stage, and a large gymnasium. Outside, students will be able to enjoy a football field, soccer field and baseball diamond, as well as basketball and volleyball courts.
The new school site is schedule to be completed by June 2008.
As of Jan. 28, Mountain Oaks Charter School in San Andreas has 395 students enrolled; Mountain Ranch has an enrollment of 35.
