Shooting in Avery Early This Morning
Avery, CA...On 9-28-17 at 01:17am, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting that there had been a family altercation and someone had been shot. Units from the Sheriff’s Office, Angels Camp Police Department, and California Highway Patrol responded. Deputies arrived on scene at a business in the 4000 block of Highway 4 in Avery finding a 19 year old male deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. He is not being identified at this time until next of kin notifications are completed.
Investigators are still gathering information and evidence but so far have learned that there was some sort of altercation between family members when the 19 year old was shot. The business was closed at the time but subjects reside at this location. A 47 year old man from Avery was immediately detained on scene and transported to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. He is being held in the Calaveras County Jail where he is being booked on the charge of murder – 187(a) PC with $2,000,000 bail. The name of the arrestee is also not being released at this time because he is related to the victim and notifications are still being made this morning to other family members.

Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office detectives are on scene at a business in Avery conducting an active investigation of a suspected homicide. Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call at about 0115 hours this morning reporting that a male had been shot. Deputies arrived on scene and found a deceased male from an apparent gunshot wound.
One subject has been detained and this is an active crime scene with detectives conducting follow-up. There are no outstanding suspects and no apparent threat to the community. More information will be released this morning when it is available.
